Black-White-Red is the flag of the german empire, not „exactly“ Nazi, but Neo-Nazis use it a lot.
Combined with the iron cross it is a obvious dog whistle by a far right person.
Patriotism in itself is kind of a right wing dog whistle, for everyone not on the right, at least very conservative, side in Germany.

If you want to argue semantics, probably not.
But he’ll be very probably someone on the far right side of the political spectrum, a nationalist and may very well believe in conspiracies about the political legitimation of the german state.
This is just stupid. If he was a real patriot, there wouldnt be need to use the imperial flag of Germany that was antidemocratic, antiliberal and militaristic (and much more but not something a person could be proud of)
Real patriots should use the Federal Flag (Schwarz-Rot-Gold). Everything else is just their weird way of historical revisioning and trying to make it look less bad by glorifying old times (and probably war and more).
This person is far beyond being a patriot or is just diving to hard into history without looking at the important parts (he might be fascinated but doesnt like to be discouraged in the thing he likes)

If he was born before 1918 it can be true. He might just be a patriot. If not, he’s either the equivalent of a Free Traveler (Reichsbürger), who attempted a coup d’état with plans to overthrow the German government recently, or just a plain old Neo-Nazi.

It’s the iron cross (Eiserne Kreuz) over the flag of the German Empire. It’s used by either Kaiserboos or bonified Nazis, as the Nazi flag is banned so they use past imperial symbols instead. No one who has it and uses it proudly is someone good to know lol
The swastika flag is banned in Germany that’s why nazis started to use this flag instead. People who use this flag aren’t patriots, they are in fact anti patriots since they want to get rid of democracy.
