Not sure about air pistols, but Airsoft doesn’t require for sure, so you could consider that.
You can always contact the store you’re thinking of purchasing from, if they require a license, often times they also offer or could recommend a good course to obtain a license.
Yes, they are classified as firearms under Maltese law. You’ll need to attend an interview at the Police Weapons Office and have a good reason. Should be fine.
If you thinking of making the license do the target shooter A as well. It costs 10€ more, with just a little more preparation and you can go for firearms as well.
