Maybe it’s colored by my lack of respect for the guy at the top of SpaceX, but I can’t help looking at these plans with lots of doubts and questions about credibility. At every step, it seems to blithely hand wave away huge challenges. Some people will say ’stop being so negative‘, but I still can’t get the stench of bulls**t out of my nose.
So Starship HLS, with 2 crew, is supposed to land perfectly on the lunar south pole? Lunar landing still frequently goes wrong, even for small craft. Then several other Starship craft will need to land nearby to give them the fuel to take off. Again this all has to go perfectly.
Oh, and they are there for a week, with who knows what safety margin for things going wrong & have to snap their fingers and have a life support system for that. A minor detail, apparently.
Added to all this, the incoming US administration is anti-science, and headed by people chosen for loyalty, not skill or competence. It all makes me doubt these plans more.
I am so apprehensive about landing a starship on the moon. I would feel better if they get several more successful landings in first, but so far that hadn’t happened much. Plus landing on the moon is going to have some new challenges that would not be as big on a smaller lander ,like the fact that the landing zone will need to be super flat and clear of debris that could cause a tilt, or how much more debris engines that big will kick up. The need for a mechanical elevator makes me nervous too, a simple ladder just had less opportunity to break.
But goddamn it will look cool
