Without reading the article – after chernobyl the world was right to shun a technology with such a possibly negative impact. If a 95% safety now is 99% safety i am cool with getting back on board

They were alway 99 percent save .. even better.. but we have around 400 operating reactors.

Well that should have happened 20 years earlier. It takes years to build one and it’s still a huge co2 investment, so it takes time to compensate / amortize. Currently we would be better off with wind and solar.

Yes, now that the world has finally seen through the terror-russian anti-nuclear power information campaign that took out the entire nuclear fleet of Germany to replace it with natural gas.
Nuclear power is the only way to sate the base power production needed for the future. We can build a million windmills and cover entire deserts with solar panels, but what happens at night, or when winds are calm? Where do we plan to get enough copper for the transmission lines or lithium for the batteries? The magnitude of metals required for solar and wind is unfeasible.
SMR’s are the way forward. Remember to bring enough rebar and concrete, because even they must be built to withstand that goddamn airliner collision at full speed… sigh.

If people really want to save the environment and the climate then they are going to have to get serious about nuclear power, and fast. Much more needed, smaller and more numerous reactors to augment renewables and a lot more investment into fusion.

The Biden administration has been particularly active in promoting nuclear power at the talks. On Tuesday, the White House [put out a detailed road map](https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/US-Nuclear-Energy-Deployment-Framework.pdf) for how the country could triple its nuclear capacity by 2050.
Later in the week, the administration signed a letter of intent to provide [a loan of roughly $979 million](https://www.nucnet.org/news/us-development-finance-corporation-signs-letter-of-intent-for-usd979-million-nuclear-loan-11-3-2024) to a project in Poland that would build three large new nuclear reactors designed by Westinghouse, an American company.
