He’s not ok. He’s depressed. And he’s one of the best and most German things you can find on TV.

This is „Bernd das Brot“. Other countries have frogs with a pig as girlfriend, Germany has a bread.

I remember as a kid, the only time I would watch TV was at night. However, Super RTL used to change into an adult program at night, so I would go watch KIKA. This show was always playing, and I used to think that channel was only for that show.

    5. He’s originally a children’s show character. But unlike the typical characters on these shows who a hyper positive, extroverted and are constantly looking for new experiences, he’s grumpy, introverted and wants to be left alone.

Incidentally, he has two friends (Chili the Sheep who’s a stuntwoman and Briegel the Bush who’s a mad scientist) who are the kind of typical characters and are not only getting on his nerves, but also drag him into all kinds of shenanigans.

Bernd was originally the perpetual ~~victim~~ test subject of their inventions, but his role extended into someone who constantly notices and points out the insanity of his surroundings, which other characters usually ignore. He resigns to the fact that he’s often powerless to change his fate but he comments on it in a cynical manner.

These traits spoke to many people so he became some sort of cult figure, especially after he appeared in the „night loop“, a placeholder on the children’s channel KiKa. He is beloved entertainment for stoners and everyone who needs to unwind from the insanity of their own life with someone who truly, deeply understands them and wishes nothing more than to be left in peace.

    6. He doesn’t want to be here and would like to leave (if they would let him out).

This was my introduction to German TV after a night out drinking. I don’t regret a thing.

He‘s basically a German version of Deadpool. Fully aware of the nature of his existence yet powerless to escape.
