[OP’s example in this article](https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/how-an-automated-spokemodel-drove-the-internet-insane.html) looks harmless on first examination. Fake influencers selling deodorant hardly seems earth-shattering. But its implications are.
99% of people seeing that fake AI generated video would assume it was a real person. Society is badly lagging reality. We already live in a world where every video of a person talking could be a fake, but few people seem truly aware of it.
Western societies are sitting ducks waiting for the next round of Russian psy-ops warfare, and with almost no defenses. We know Russia employs thousands of people to attack Europe and America with these methods – who’s defending against it?
You assume we haven’t already learned to discount anything we see on the internet.
I was 27 when the internet became a thing and that was the first thing we learned. No, that girl is not a girl and that is not a giant wave crashing into Miami Beach.

It’s been possible to create fake audio and images for like 50 years now and we’re all completely inoculated to the idea that if the King of England starts trying to sell you deodorant that’s probably fake.
I don’t see why suddenly people will become rubes immediately just because it’s a video now. I mean really 99% of people are going to believe the pope wears Balenciaga?
It’s not about majorly out of character statements coming from celebs that’s the danger. The pope wearing drip is obviously fake. But if the pope was seen making a comment on some social issue that isn’t what he actually thinks but is just outrageous enough to be shared amongst people on Facebook who have been convinced of its reality, little can be done to dissuade them of its being fake. The pope himself saying it’s fake won’t help.
The danger lies in small social manipulations, fear mongering, and using famous faces to spread ideology in a much more powerful way than has existed before. The disinformation age began many years ago and is beginning to snowball.

I’m pretty sure that China and Russia are deep in social networks in many countries to amplify political discord and hatred.
I believe a side effect of this will be equally damaging – When presented with evidence that your favorite person is a deplorable criminal, they can just claim it is a deep fake, and the evidence is all fabricated, and a lot of morons will believe it.
If you’re not mentally disabled you already know to avoid influcancers. And you assume every video is fake just like the bullshit propaganda those idiots try to spread.
My 95 year old grandmother could tell that things were deepfakes and that was several years ago before she died. The technology hasn’t improved since, at all, which suggests it has hit a ceiling.
Russia and China don’t even need to make „deepfakes“, why would they bother when you don’t need video evidence to make wild claims that many people will blindly believe?
Fake? Who even needs fake videos? Real videos are just reposted with a different title and everyone believes it. We’re fucked.
