Schwangerschaftswoche.

  1. Chemicals commonly found in sunscreen, makeup and other personal care products could be putting pregnancies at risk, a new study warns.

Phenols and parabens in these products increase a pregnant woman’s risk of high blood pressure by 57%, particularly at 24 to 28 weeks of gestation, researchers reported Wednesday in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives.

“We found chemicals in everyday soaps, lotions, makeup, sunscreen and other personal care products and consumer products [that] increased risk of hypertension” among a study group of pregnant women in Puerto Rico, said study lead researcher Julia Varshavsky. She’s an assistant professor of health sciences at Northeastern University in Boston.

Phenols and parabens are used as UV filters in sunscreens, and to prevent the growth of harmful mold and bacteria in makeup and cosmetics, researchers said

Honestly, cosmetics in general are unhealthy. The preservatives are one reason, but surfactants, detergents, microplastics and VOCs in most of them are awful, too. The more because of constant contact with skin and membranes.

It is not uncommon to find people that have become allergic to certain perfumes or additives and there have been other reports that strongly correlate the use of cosmetics with detriment to the health, e.g.

I think this is worrying and people are not skeptical enough about the cosmetics industry. Pharma is an easy target, but cosmetics are far less under scrutiny than should be considering their widespread use and general acceptance. It is more or less a quack powered field based on subjective semi-studies. I am a strong believer that this industry needs stronger legislature and better awareness to its detrimental effect on society and environment.

Phenols and parabens are bad and are associated with issues in pregnancy.

Phenols and parabens can be found in makeup and sunscreen.

Is there an association between these two things? Not as far as I can tell in this study.

It’s really dangerous to be putting (more) doubt on sunscreens. You know what is REALLY dangerous? Skin cancer.

    > Puerto Rico is an island that contains a high proportion of 18 Superfund sites, with evidence of elevated exposure to Superfund chemicals among local residents, including phthalates and heavy metals, the effects of which may be exacerbated by high maternal stress and climate vulnerability. We hypothesized that higher maternal phenol and paraben levels would be associated with differences in systolic and diastolic BP (SBP and DBP, respectively) and higher odds of elevated BP and hypertension during pregnancy.

  4. Can you link to the original study? I’d like to look at the sample size and diversity of particpants, how they measured chemical exposure, and see if there are issues with causality vs. correlation.
