    1. In my limited experience with r/norske, it seems like a sub for all the right wingers. So yeah, you it’s a mostly far right sub where racist shit gets upvoted a lot.

    2. SentientSquirrel on

That sub originally became a bit more popular back in the beginning of last year, when many subs on Reddit [shut down in protest](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2023_Reddit_API_controversy). The largest Norwegian-language sub r/norge took part in that protest and closed down for weeks, leaving many users hopping over to r/norske as an alternative during that time, myself included.

Personally I left that sub about a year ago because it did seem to be on a rapid slide towards a right-wing agenda that I wanted no part in. I haven’t visited it since, but what you describe fits well with what seemed to be brewing over there at that time. I’ve also seen mentions of it on other subs since then, and based on what people say it doesn’t seem like it got any better over there in the last year.

I don’t believe that sub represents any kind of average or majority view of Norwegians, but rather a loud minority.

    3. Real immigrants come the legal route and are placed by quotas in Europe.

If you are a refugee, you seek help at the first safe port of call.

If you travel through all of Europe to land in Norway you are not a refugee, you are a welfare seeker, and should be thrown back home no matter the situation you „escape“ from.

Most Norwegians have zero issues with normal immigration, no matter religion or nationality, meaning educated people who come and do their part for the country and economy. What we don’t like are slobs.

r/norske is a counterforum to the more censored and politically correct (and bigger) r/norge. It was created after years of what many saw as overfocus on LGBT issues (the banner is extremely dominated by LGBT flagging), combined with overmoderation – low trigger banning (ask a neutral question about the banner? -> ban), extremely groupthinky up / downvoting and so on. The usual Reddit stuff, on speed.

Since it fills a vacuum, r/norske is by contrast less filtered, including functioning as a vent for some of the rightwing forces. It also has leftwing posts (often quite extreme leftwing opinions well upvoted), it has for other reasons controversial topics, „uncool“ topics, stuff that would be downvoted in r/norge, mainly because its not cool enough.

Despite the occasional presence of rightwing attitudes like what you post, I prefer r/norske, because the discussion is considerably more in-depth, higher quality, and, well – interesting, compared to the standard americanized groupthink slog you’ll find on r/norge.

That said, r/norske is a place where you will find controversial people and opinions, and thus you can not read it and think it represents the average Norwegian mindset.

I appreciate you cleaning up and downvoting extreme opinions – debating would be better though.

Edit: Debating over downvoting also goes for you assclowns downvoting this post. Thanks.

    5. It might have to do with anonymity on this platform. I’ve personally only had few incidents of xenophobic people since I’ve arrived here a few years ago. But I do read more xenophobic comments here on reddit.

In general though, there are some clear barriers to proper integration. Generally if one finds themselves doing like they do in rome, you’ll get along just fine but might not get invited for more closely knit activities such as christmas dinner.

    6. RubberAndSteel on

The sub was made because r/norge will ban you for anything that goes against the echochamber in there. Different opinions are not allowed there, sometimes people get banned for sharing real facts/statistics if it offends the very woke-end.

r/norske won’t ban you for different opinions.

I’m no far right person, but I prefer r/norske as it’s more „free speech“, but in r/norge you better read through your comment a hundred times to be sure that you won’t be banned. 😆

    7. Like most of the comments have pointed out, r/norske has a very strong right-wing bend. If you want a sub that is a bit more mixed and more representative of Norwegian views more broadly, then r/norge is a better place I think.

    8. Norway has been the first country at the forefront of the question. Their cultural and immigration models are amongst the most envied in the world.

American progressivism has nothing to do with Scandinavian left wing politics. This is bullshit that has no place anywhere outside the US. So take your US politics and references back to the US.

    9. andreigaspar on

All of them are equally bad in my opinion. Tbh I prefer the more direct douchebags than the dog whistlers in r/norge who go through all that effort to package their hate in a palatable format.

Edit: just to add that reddit doesn’t reflect real life. In my nearly 5 years living here, I’ve met 3 people who were obviously antagonistic.

    10. EmperorOfNorway on

I believe Norway should stop immigration from all but Ukraine🤷‍♂️ were going to regret ending up like Sweden. And its not racist, its just a matter of geography. Why cant Saudi, Qatar, Iran and FAE take the arabian refugees?

    11. I am an immigrant myself and I am anti-immigration. It´s just too many people, specially here in Germany, most of the people coming in are not those needed to better the economy but rather just people who managed to illegally cross this or the other border and want the free things the German government gives them like free rent, free pocket money, free healthcare, free children nursery for their many kids, free drivers licenses, the possibility to become citizens without speaking the language and in a matter of a couple of years, amongst other many things. There are other problems like criminality, violence, inner safety, the creation of pralell cultures, housing shortage, infrastructure abandonment and many other things. People are not against immigration because they are mean, but rather because of having real life quality loss in most aspects of their lives, due to too many people pouring in.

    12. Acting holier than thou towards people when you don’t even live in their country nor understand why they may have those views is not something to be proud of.

    13. Unfair-Cheetah-2078 on

As long as the immigrants, are willing to assimilate and adopt Norwegian culture, I see no problem whatsoever. What I don’t like, when they refuse to adapt to our culture and they want US, the local people to adapt to them. That’s just wrong. However, most of the immigrants I know are good, hard-working people

It’s important to keep in mind that Reddit users in Norway overall are not representative of Norwegians in general. I haven’t seen statistics on it, but my impression is that Reddit users in Norway generally are younger than the average population. In terms of education, my impression is in fact that Norwegian Reddit is quite well educated, and that there are a lot of tech-savy engineers using the service.

That said, it’s quite well known that people who are very active on online platforms tend to hold more radical views than the majority.

The mainstream view of immigrants among Norwegians is generally accepting, but there is lots of variation. I think the simplest way of putting it into perspective is that the only major political party that has flagged clear anti-immigration policies is FrP (The Progressive Party), which currently holds roughly 12% of seats in parliament. It’s important to note that the party’s official program is quite mellow compared to other right-leaning parties in Europe. There is an overall consensus on immigration policies among the large majority in parliament. Only the socialist left (SV and Rødt) take a stance the other way, advocating for accepting more refugees into the country.

Most anti-immigration sentiment in Norway is actually anti-Islam, I think. I think it’s fair to say that quite a large degree of Norwegians are critical of Islam, for various reasons. We are a very secular country, after all. Very very few accept or advocate violence against muslims, though. It’s just that anti-immigration people tend to be very loud.

I do not think that users of r/norske are at all representative of widely held viewpoints in Norway. It is my clear impression that r/norske is more right-leaning than r/norge and r/Norway, but to say it is a „far-right“ sub is probably overstating it a bit.

    15. I not positiv to immigration we should try to reduce the population in Norway. Because of many reasons. I advocate for decline population in Norway and globally. But also it’s wrong that key people needed in their own country come her.

    16. Micro_Viking872 on

Norwegians are realistic about immigration, and don’t shy away from either side of the conversation, like you seem to expect. Unlike the UK, speech is free here.

    17. Anti immigration is a two sided thing. Most if not 99% of norwegains are completely open to integrated immigrants no matter background.

      But key word is „integrated“

This is where theres a huge split, some dont mind, some mind alot. And when it comes to negative sides of unintrgrated and unlawful immigrants it becomes a social problem where some dont want them at all, and some other may see that these people need help. Etc etc
