      A tiny, levitated bead is at the core of an unprecedentedly bright laser that shoots particles of sound instead of light.

      Just as a ray of light is made up of many particles called photons, sound consists of particle-like chunks called phonons. For several decades, researchers have been creating “phonon lasers” that output these particles in a narrow beam, similar to the way optical lasers emit photons.

      Phonons are less affected by moving through liquids, so they could be more effective than conventional lasers for imaging watery tissues in biomedicine or in some deep-sea monitoring devices, Jing says.

    2. TIL there’s sound particles. Here I thought sound were all about vibrations in a medium all my life.

      Can those phonons exist in a vacuum? (Edit: no they’re quasi particles)

      Could i learn to do it without the microphone and this contraption? And would it work if i shout through the internet? Because… that would be so nice.

    4. „Sound particles?“ Do sci-tech writers even have high school degrees anymore? Sound is just moving air. There’s no THING moving through the air, just the air pushing on stuff. Sound particles is like saying „gas stones.“

    5. Can people stop calling it sound particles that’s just imprecise. Just because sound vibrations can be quantised as phonons does not make them particles. The only particles involved are atoms making up the medium through which sound waves propagate

    6. Err, my eyes hurt a little reading this because laser is an acronym and the L in it specifically stands for “light”.

      Devices that produce different kinds of coherent waves usually have the first letter changed such as maser, phaser etc.

      Also, phonons are not particles. Being wave packets, they exhibit certain properties of particles like having a location and size, but they are still not and should be put in quotes.

    10. Phonons are quasiparticles in periodic solids (i.e. crystals).
      If you really need to quantize sound wave in translation invariant media (i.e. liquid or gas) please call it something else.
