Submission statement: What are the long-term environmental impacts of evaporating millions of gallons of water annually to cool AI data centers?
Is the energy usage of AI applications, which can be up to 1000 times more intensive than traditional applications, worth the marginal benefits they provide?
Should tech companies be held accountable for their environmental impact, especially when they abandon carbon neutrality to prioritize AI development?
It is worse as why certain things are getting out of control. You could technically see it with your own eyes.
But at least we put those damn artists out of a job /s
„AI’s environmental impact“ must be the most hilariously overrated thing I’ve seen „environmentalist“ concerned about recently.
It feels like it’s the new plastic straws. Fossil fuel industry would much prefer if people would just ignore all the oil and coal being extracted and burned, and would instead focus on the horrible evil AI being definitely certainly very-very ungood for the environment. All while the total of compute used by „classic“ workloads still dwarfs all „AI“ workloads by a few orders of magnitude.
AI should be used only to make slow things/discoveries faster, not stupid search or email writing assistants. As usual, big corpos delivering sloppy useless shit damaging the planet. Hope we’ll find some better uses for these LLMs.
