An algorithm needs good data, but it was never easy to obtain gun death related data in the US.
The NRA did a great job to obstruct any such scientific work.

This area of usage seems like the very very very very last bastion you would use something like this on.

Unless there’s some comparison between how many false negatives the software produces, and how many human judgements produce, this is meaningless as far as deciding whether it’s a good idea. (The article is walled, so I haven’t read it, but I’d be amazed if they do. Anyone who has read it please correct me if I’m mistaken.)
I would be amazed if this somehow managed to make police worse at safeguarding women from their abusive husbands. Especially given how many police are abusive husbands.
The oldest trick in the propagandist’s book is to report on more of the failures of the thing to be demonised and less of the failures of the favoured approach. It’s called editorial bias, and the mass media specialise in it.
