An Eton spokesperson told Business Insider that Eton frequently reviews its mobile phone and device policies to weigh the benefits and challenges technology brings to the educational environment. Starting in September, new „Year 9“ (freshmen) students will receive „brick“ phones, which allow calls and texts but have no internet functionality.
Furthermore, students can only use their phones outside school hours. They still have access to school-issued iPads during classes, but only to support their academic studies. Eton’s „age-appropriate“ technology rules for upperclassmen remain unchanged.
This is such an obvious policy I can’t believe it’s news. Somehow every single administration in the whole continent caved to the total bullshit heaped on them by students and parents about „needing a phone“ simultaneously, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised its an irrational and, frankly, idiotic situation. TBH many/most institutions should have such a policy. Universities, police departments, hospitals, etc.
I see this as an absolute win. Bow to the Nokia race overlords.
Quite a reasonable compromise I think. The argument is always oh they need a cell phone in case of emergencies, but the smart phones are just a pointless vehicle for distraction, so have a brick.
I respect the effort but doubt its probability of success. A crash course of the subject matter of „challenges technology brings to the educational environment“ would probably be more helpful.
