If you just stay out of Finland untill you are 30 years old there will be no repercussions.
Have you been livin in Finland during past 7 years? If not you should be automatically excempted from service, this all would be in error, and no application is required.
I wonder how you got into this situation. It is probably most convenient to stay away from Finland until you are 30 years old.
Sounds like a scam, there are no deserts in Finland.
How old are you, how long have you lived in Canada, do you have dual citizenship, and do you care about Finnish citizenship?
I had to go through this a decade ago when I needed to renew my Finnish passport. I had to email the military and request an exemption based on having lived in Canada for over 7 years. I always knew I would move back to Finland so I explained that I would be open to serving if I moved back before I turned 30 but needed an exemption to get my passport renewed.
Just be honest and keep your explanation concise.
There isn’t enough data to say. You didn’t mention anything about your own circumstances and what lead to this.
However, broadly speaking unintentionally deserting when you have never lived in Finland rarely leads into criminal prosecution if the person proactively resolves the matter.
And in cases where they are convicted the most common punishment is fines.
Just sort the things out and you’ll be fine.
As they state, desertion and exception from service are separate matters. They’ll likely will go through the process regarding desertion regardless of what you’ll do, but if you’ll sort it out promptly, you are unlikely to get punished.
Lol I just recently left working there.
That aside you should definitely contact whoever is listed in that message or whatever agency is responsible according to it. If you end up visiting Finland you could get recognised and taken by police / MPs.
If you value your citizenship you will do as they ask instead of posting this stupid shit on reddit.
Nothing will happen. Just do the paperwork and they will give you an exception.
However, I recommend you to do the service. It is a lifetime experience. You can emerge into finish youth culture.
I unfortunately did not do it. I did military service in my other country. Only to later regret not doing that military service too.
The text has quite a few spelling/grammatical mistakes, I would question the authenticity of this message
How did this happen? Didn’t you get notified of your call-up?
Definetely should go do the conscript service in Finland. I’m not saying that you should do it straight away but it’s a great once-in-a-lifetime experience that every capable Finn ought to live through.
Seems like SA is hungry for new meat

If you come to Finland now, they will arrest you at border. They propably take your passport away. There is propably an active search warrant on you. I don’t know if that applies to whole Schengen area (arrested and moved to Finland), or just the border of Finland. If they catch you, the case (deserting) will go to court, of course, and you get verdict (suspended prison sentence) as you are guilty (forgetting or didn’t know is no excuse). This might affect your life if you need a security clearance for work later.
It is a really good idea to take care of the issue from Canada. Do not come to Finland, unless you get better advice. I would first handle the exemption (applied with a paper and you get decision later on paper), as after you have exemption, your passport won’t be taken away and you can leave Finland, if you come to Finland. At the moment I think you would be stuck in Finland. Then you can take care of the criminal case against you – or alternatively, wait until the crime expires in a few years, and avoid Finland for that time.
Just be careful and take this really seriously. That issue has potential of causing some drastic things to happen. If a Finnish citizen does not go to service, military police will start looking for the person in Finland at resident address etc. and deliver him to garrison (with force as necessary) if they find him. It is taken very seriously. Also the person can’t leave Finland.
The punishment for deserting service is your least worry.
NAL. Just my opinion on matter. YMMV.
If you come to Finland they Will shoot you at The border. Happened to My Brother when he was sent The Same thing he was coming to serve but they just shot his ass
