Though some hardline Saami nutjobs might think otherwise, Finland still has freedom of speech and expression.
It is a USA thing, mate. Wear whatever you want.
Nope.
Believe it or not, straight to jail.
No.
We call the complainers city saamelaiset.
They almost never even live in Lapland. And the artisans who make traditional Sami clothing are distraught, tourists no longer buy them, and locals don’t really wear them either.
It’s certainly not illegal. Whether it’s in good taste is a different matter.
Individual pieces like a bonnet, mittens, or boots are not that uncommon, but wearing the full traditional dress would be pretty cringe if you’re not Saami.
The nutjobs suing Square Enix are just fucking bonkers crazy. You can wear whatever you want, don’t worry about it!
No it’s not illegal to wear Sami clothing.
As for the law suit I’m not sure they have a legally sound case here, but just wanted to point out that just wearing something and using something in a commercial capacity aren’t the same thing ethically or legally speaking.
It is not illegal as long as there are no ‚family‘ patterns or sigils on them, which are next to impossible to get if you’re not a part of one. And even then, not illegal, just considered disrespectful
No, but it’s frowned upon.
It’s like a regular ‚murican wearing a native ‚murican’s attire. Unless the person is one of the Village People, it’s considered a faux pas.
I have two co-workers who are Saami but have lived here in Helsinki all their lives.
They are fantastic, chill women but when ever anything about Saami comes up they change and become very…i’m trying to come up with the right word, maybe difficult, bit crazy.
They would go nuts If someone would wear their traditional dress :/
No. I say this as a Saami. If you use it respectfully and dont make fun of it, wear it as long you want. Almost every municipality have their own design for it. Just dont make fun of it please. Thats all i ask.
It’s not illegal. Traditionally only sámi people can wear it, but there are exceptions, like someone who is respected by the community being gifted one or a non-sámi who marries a sámi person can wear one. These aren’t official laws, just tradition.
Fake gákti I’ve only seen used to mock and ridicule us (Nunnukalailaa typa shit) or profit off of us. It is direspectful and frowned upon, but not illegal. You can wear whatever you want.
„Cultural appropriation“ is not a thing in Finland luckily. Wear whatever you want
Not illegal but a douchey thing to do. Would you ever wear a romani dress if you aren’t romani?
