Translation of the article : ” When addressing the subject of wearing the veil and the principle of state neutrality, the liberal candidate went so far as to say to his opponent: “If you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay in Belgium”.
Asked about their positions regarding the wearing of convictional signs and the veil, Pierre-Yves Jeholet stressed that his party was for the neutrality of the State and therefore opposed to the wearing of the veil in the public service.
“The veil should not be a reason for discrimination,” replied Nabil Boukili, who noted that certain countries, such as Great Britain, authorize the wearing of religious symbols in many functions. Dictating to women what they should or should not wear is comparable to what Iran is doing, he argued. “Don’t come and give us lessons here in Belgium,” retorted Pierre-Yves Jeholet, attacking his opponent of the day. “There are rules, we respect them. If you don’t like it, you don’t have to stay in Belgium.”
Words which shocked both his interlocutor and the presenter of the debate. “Where do you want me to go back, Mr. Jeholet?” asked Mr. Boukili a few minutes later.
Looks like he lost the debate and resorted to an easy insult. Shameful
We have separation between church and state. Those are the rules. Anyone who doesn’t like it is free to go to a theocracy.
We must absolutely not become like the UK. Accepting bullshits from every religions is not the way to go.
Respect the country that gave you the freedom you didn’t get in the one you were born in, and it’s an easy exercise, just keep your beliefs/religion in your home and do not try to spread unwanted ideas.
Wow, very much racist. /s
He is just trying to compete with VB.
I mean, what’s the big deal ?
State and Religion are separated in Belgium, that’s it. I agree that religious symbols should not be worn when working in a state or public role. As far as I know we are a Laic country.
He said “if you don’t like it you don’t have to stay in Belgium”, what was wrong about that ? It’s probably not very diplomatical, sure, but nothing there is false or insulting is there ?
Boukili made it racist by asking later “where should I go back to ?”, Jeholet didn’t say “go back”, he just said “leave if you don’t like it”.
Can we stop calling everything we don’t like ‘racism’? I don’t like what he says, but it’s not racism. And it applies to everyone.
This is clearly a trend at the moment. This week VRT also publiced an article about ‘racist chants’ in Germany. They were anti-migration, not racist, but that doesn’t hit as hard as calling them racist of course.
Clickbait title OP..
Where did race come into play?
I honestly think we’ll get a centrum-right government with NV-A, CD&V, Open VLD, MR, Les Engagés and Ecolo. Together they will reach 51%+ on federal level. Open VLD won’t like governing with NV-A, but having MR “with them” in the goverment will make them feel less isolated. And Ecolo will be thrown in there, to achieve a solid majority, and also to have 3 Walloon parties to counterbalance the 3 Flemish parties. Also Ecolo is
How is that racist?
There is absolutely no racism in the remark… Don’t see racism everywhere… it’s too easy !
What most born Belgians don’t get, you’re either neerlandophone or francophone, most of you don’t respect the Germanophone community, and most of your experience and knowledge is anchored to what you know best, black Belgians are mostly from western and central Africa and most Arabic speakers are from the Maghreb.
That signals a severe lack of knowledge about the rest of Europe. Therefore the presence of others at least until the treaty of Lisbon exists is an addition not a substraction.
