They were colonies yes, but that doesn’t mean this was ‘colonialism’ which usually describes a certain period of history

Even colonization is a stretch. Sometimes they settled, sometimes they took land through war, sometimes they had partnerships with locals, sometimes they lived in trade communities at the graces of local lords. Sometimes they were used as leverage by locals in deals with Tyre or Carthage, sometimes they ran protection rackets, sometimes they needed protection. Painting a map with red doesn’t make it all Greek settlement. The reality was far more complicated.

A lot of these stretch pretty far inland, Hemeroskopeion was by all accounts a small city with little influence on it’s immediate area. Much less settling an area the size of the Peloponnese.

Really, most of these should be dots instead of swathes of colonies.

Magna graecia, even during the highest period of Greek settlement, was a collection of cities along the coast while the interior was controlled by various Italic tribes.

The Greeks won’t like this. They believe they have a right to all those places but don’t ask how they got them first.

The Ukrainian city of Odessa was named after a Greek colony in the same area

    6. If Linkin‘ Park-In the End were a map (I’ve tried so hard, I’ve gone so far, but in the end it doesn’t even matter.)
