If the federal gov stopped trying to make Canada cold india none of these movements would take off.

Can a province secede? Does the Canadian constitution even allow for it?

    4. Various_War5042 on

…on Russia’s orders, and with their troll farms support, don’t forget that

    5. Are Americans voting in the Canadian separation questions? If not, this is 100% up to Albertans to answer, and Canada to reconcile with.

Trump didn’t put the questions on the Canadian ballot. I know the guy is evil, but he isn’t omnipotent.

*The referendum marks a remarkable rise for a cause long relegated to Alberta’s political fringes. After the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2022 Freedom Convoy, activists who had organized against vaccine mandates and other restrictions turned their attention to Alberta independence.*
*The convoy began over vaccine requirements for cross-border truckers but grew into a broader protest against pandemic restrictions, paralyzing downtown Ottawa and blocking major Canada-U.S. border crossings.*

*Clemens said COVID accelerated the movement by teaching people how to organize politically and become more involved in party politics. She said separatists also see Monday’s vote not simply as a step toward independence but as a way to give Alberta leverage in negotiations with Ottawa.*

It’s always the same fuckin lunatics.

    7. It’s „funny“, especially after the shitshow that was brexit, and how much it fucked them over, that all these right wing dipshits don’t realize how much the russian interference they’re pushing for is gonna totally fuck their lives over.

For a crowd that presumably prides themselves on „free thinking“, they sure do get let themselves be guiding towards the abyss by those that don’t give a fuck about them

To my neighbors to the north, I am so fucking sorry for what my country has become. Not that apologies mean much anymore, very understandably, but still.

    9. To put this in historical perspective, the separatist dynamic has long been a presence in Canadian politics. In 1972, Quebec led the way under the expectation that Quebec would go first, then Ontario, then the plains provinces together possibly joining the US the Maritime provinces and then BC. After wards, the breakup of Canada would give rise to 5 separate countries. A referendum was held and the secession movement failed as Canadians realized that economically, it was a losing proposition.

    10. how is this even going to a vote. Its a tiny amount of Albertans who actually want this…

I hope the referendum says 100% of people in AB wanna leave so we can laugh at them when they realize it’s constitutionally impossible and the other provinces and Territories aren’t gonna rewrite the constitution just to loose a vast amount of resources and let them leave.

And true Canadians wont let that happen. I believe Alberta, Quebec and other provinces should have a reasonable say in their own affairs, but we have also have benefited from centralized uniformity on other issues. Voting in federal elections is a good example. Our system is relatively clear, uniform, and transparent compared to the US.

If a province does get through the succession process, somehow, what happens to all the people who voted no? Tough luck for them?

    14. pelirrojoconquistado on

Instead of trying to address the issues Albertans have with Canada a lot of people just want to call them stupid. We need our country to come together, berating people for being unhappy is not going to do that.

America wants a donbas situation. Bonus if that means elections have to be suspended. Piss off, Americans.

Let’s trade, Canada. Washington State for Alberta, straight up. Who says no

    17. Present-Wonder-4522 on

It reminds me of the crisis involving Earl Grey in 1832 in England.

Didn’t US just warned Canada not to interfere with US midterm elections? What is US doing in other countries affairs?

    19. CirnoWhiterock on

Mark Carney might be the luckiest guy in politics.

At a time when his brand of Neoliberalism seems to be dying everywhere else Trump just keeps giving him gift after gift to run on.

I’m so tired of reading people on Reddit who think this is all fake and all contrived by the US. The US and Trump are taking advantage of a pre-existing grievance.

No, I’m not saying AB should separate or become part of the US, but Canada is a very dysfunctional country in many ways and western provinces have legitimate concerns.

This is a problem with a very long history and it will continue being a problem as long as the system continues with the status quo.

You can focus on the short term and only talk about this as if it only existed in the past couple of years or so, but some of have been talking about this for decades (Justin Trudeau’s father was hated by AB because of his national energy policy) and we’d like to actually solve the problem.

Canada is a very silly and ridiculous country in some very important ways. Provinces control energy infrastructure and so you have this stupid situation where AB produces oil but can’t even send it to eastern Canada to be used by people there, instead, it gets sent to the US to be refined, and AB struggles to sell it on the world market and must instead sell it for a discount to Americans, all because BC and QC (and ON) refuse to allow pipelines in their territory. Meanwhile, QC imports oil from overseas and QC takes an enormous amount of money every year from the federal government and has for generations.

Trump is taking advantage of a problem, he didn’t create it. Canada created it with unserious and stupid policies.

Is there any other country on earth that behaves like Canada? Is there anywhere on earth where a sub-national government takes money from another sub national government and then vetoes economic policy related to the main economy of the other?

Instead of just saying „oh, this is all Trump’s fault“, maybe look at what is actually happening. Why is Canada in such a fractured state in the first place? Trump didn’t do that.

The situation with BC and indigenous land rights is just another giant can of worms and goes to show how unserious Canada is. Industry spent years getting permission from the elected bands of the indigenous peoples, and then the hereditary chiefs blocked development and left-wing white protestors in the cities sided with the hereditary chiefs.

Nothing can be done or built in that situation, and the indigenous peoples of those bands suddenly have no representation.

      It’s unfathomably stupid.

Canada needs to get its shit together and it needs to do so yesterday.

    21. I would say the PM has a pretty good grasp of what type of people are running the United States. Refreshing to see such candid talk.

    22. KorLeonis1138 on

Yes! We know! We are voting against this and it will fail. Now get the RCMP and CSIS and whoever else in gear and put an end to this seditious conspiracy. The traitors working with a hostile foreign power (yes, the US is hostile) need to be behind bars.

    23. SnooCapers2591 on

American here. Would it make Canadians feel better to know the US does NOT actually want to break up or annex Canada? There is zero serious support for all the expense and complications required for that kind of endeavor. It would seriously upset our political balance too. Even conservative Canadians are usually to the left of US Democrats. Trump likes to troll but Congress would never go for it.
