Russia struck six Ukrainian power facilities in just one day despite Donald Trump claiming he had brokered an energy ceasefire between the two countries, Volodymyr Zelensky has said.
The Ukrainian president claimed on Monday night that Russia had hit petrol stations, energy infrastructure as well as residential buildings, killing at least two people and injuring 33.
Electricity rationing has been introduced in parts of Ukraine to avoid overloading damaged equipment, Ukraine’s state-owned grid operator, Ukrenergo, said.
“This is what happens when Russia sees the prospect of higher revenues for its war machine,” Mr Zelensky said on social media.
Izyum in Kharkiv suffered blackouts after a Russian strike destroyed power grids, while Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia also saw power cuts because of damage caused to energy equipment by Russian attacks.
The US president blindsided Kyiv on Sunday when he announced that both sides had agreed to an energy ceasefire “effective immediately” – a statement which was met with surprise by Mr Zelensky and the Kremlin.
Mr Zelensky said while it was “news” to him, Ukraine would support the ceasefire if Moscow did.
But Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, said late on Monday that Kyiv did not deserve the “respite” a ceasefire would bring.
Since Mr Trump’s declaration, Russia has continued to shell Ukraine.

We’re also talking about a man who promised that he wasn’t planning to attack Ukraine, then immediately attacked Ukraine, and has broken every ceasefire that has been agreed upon.

Zelensky gets to piss off Trump and Putin at same time. Without the stupidity of all those beautiful lifes lost, you could actually get envious.
If I could just piss of Trump and Putin for the rest of my days and nothing else, I might take this deal.
Russia has broken every single cease fire that has been proposed, and even agreed to, since the war started.
Putin and his generals are fundamentally untrustworthy for agreements like this.
