SUBMISSION STATEMENT
Mark Carney thanked U.S. President Donald Trump for “his leadership toward securing an energy ceasefire” between Ukraine and Russia, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Sunday.
But on the same day, Carney also expressed to Ukraine’s leader that Trump’s new diesel supply agreement with Russia undermines Canada’s efforts to end the war in Europe.
Trump posted on his Truth Social account on Sunday that Ukraine and Russia have agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” but did not immediately offer any details.
Following a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday morning, the PMO said Carney was clear that the fuel agreement “is in direct opposition to the efforts of Ukraine, Canada, and our allies to create peace and stability in Europe.”
And it was such a telegraphed move to give Trump a reason to complain about Ukraine attacking Russia’s refineries. Straight up hypocrisy that the GOP used to complain about Europe buying natural gas, but I guess it’s different when it’s „solving“ a problem they started by attacking Iran.
Absolutely it does, and Trump absolutely knew that.
Canada probably just needs to pay buyers of Russian diesel the difference between the current diesel price and the price at which Russia will be selling it, multiplied by the physical volume of Russia’s diesel sales. Then Carney’s (and Canada’s) words would carry weight. And until that is done, he is doing exactly the same thing as Trump- playing to populism
