    1. I live here, I didn’t notice anything from the datacenters that day but the wildfire smoke was literally everywhere, even as far as Tyson’s in areas without as many datacenter, was a very bad air quality day and my home air filter was running on overdrive.

„Virginia DEQ Director Michael Rolband told local officials his agency had no authority to stop the generators under current regulations“

This is in response to residents having to flee their own homes due to extreme pain and difficulty breathing. But „legally we can’t do anything.“

This is a future that leads nowhere. Imagine asphyxiating in your own family home while the sheriff stands at your door shrugging dolefully at you about ordinance law.

This flair? Artificial Intelligence? I’m told that’s the enemy!

    4. If you live in the United States and are not registered to vote in the midterms please fix that and turn out.

      >A Facility Unlike Its Neighbors
VA2 operates entirely on onsite power, which made last July’s turbine failure a much bigger problem than a typical data-center outage.

      >VA2 is not connected to the electric grid. Eight onsite natural-gas turbines supply primary power, with the diesel generators serving as backup. Vantage confirmed the turbine plant failed, triggering the extended generator run, and said the onsite plant is temporary, with grid connection planned once the utility can support the facility’s load.

This single datacenter is infamous in the area for the on-site generation. No other datacenter in the area does this, and there’s a lot of them.

    7. I have worked in the data center industry for 15 years and data centers do NOT need to run diesels unless there is an issue causing loss of power.

This is a super shitty data center

    8. just saying when they say, you have no recourse, they mean no legal peaceful recourse. There are other means of recourse which we can’t acknowledge but yes, they exist.

and they will, one would assume, not be hypothetical options for long

    9. Virginia DEQ Director Michael Rolband told local officials his agency had no authority to stop the generators under current regulations. Vantage’s air permit allows generator use during emergencies, and the turbine failure qualified. DEQ said inspectors would review the facility afterward and take appropriate action if they identified a permit violation.

Our government is utterly and completely corrupted. It no longer has legitimacy and we should act accordingly.

    11. If I’ve learned anything from the Trump presidency it’s that if there’s no legal recourse, then you just use illegal recourse and deal with it later, after your lungs start functioning again.

    12. Having worked in 3 data centers throughout my 20s…. those generators are so god damned loud and the freaking reek.

    13. If the EPA won’t fine for pollution more than the cost of running the diesel + downtime then yeah that’s gonna happen.

Can we fast forward to the point during the rebellion where the resistance has decommissioned blackhawks and missiles and we flatten all these data centers?

I hear if you plug the exhaust that it makes the air cleaner. They make stuff just for that and you can buy it at many stores. It’s called DEF. Put in the generators fuel tank and it will make them run quieter and cleaner. (This is a joke don’t put DEF in diesel fuel. It will destroy the fuel system and engine.)

Piercing a radiator will shut down or destroy a generator.

      Just fyi.

Next tune up of these generators, I bet some silly mechanic is going to remove and misplaced all the glow plugs. What a klutz.

    18. I used to work for an ISP in Virginia a long time ago. Rarely, if there was a power outage, they’d fire up the diesel generator and after just a couple hours the smoke and chemicals from the generator would start to make you sick and get terrible headaches. It was rough to work in, and I think the company would gamble between shutting down and seeing if they could last long enough to get power restored.

That was 30 years ago. I can’t imagine this on a large facility scale running for that long.
