Any campaign for less meat consumption should focus on health for the individual (and possibly financial cost* for the individual) rather than health for the environment.

*Though from these data it seems that the cost of meat in Switzerland is not really a big disincentive

Nice contrast to the regular complaints we get in here on high meat prices, eh?

The reference intake for meat (excluding poultry) is 30kcal/day. That’s 100-150g of beef per week..

    3. It’s an interesting topic for us in basic research because it’s one of the issues where the public perception is vastly different than the reality. Whenever there is a political debate about meat consumption, there is a very strong emotional response here. I am by no means vegetarian or vegan but the amounts we consume are ridiculous. A generation or two ago it was normal to have meat once a week, and grilling a big chunk on Sundays was a display of wealth. We lack a lot of fiber in our diet too, and it’s a tangible difference in gastrointestinal health when you change this in your diet.

The data is from 2014-15, I don’t think, that it has increased since then. The percentages sound very high, but if we compare it to other European countries, Switzerland’s meat consumption is still on the lower end

Reminder that the Planetary Health Diet has nothing to do with the nutrition or human health, only with the ecological impact.

    6. Definitely not me, meat consumption is waaaay down. Can’t afford that shit

I do buy a good portion of mince (beef) and chicken a week. As someone who loves the gym its just more reliable protein scource especially for were i wanna go in weight.

    8. The Federal [MenuCH](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/menuch-informationen) study this is based on is over a decade old.
And the Lancet’s nutritional guidelines for planetary health are over twenty years old.

More recently, [meat consumption is consistently decreasing](https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/various/the-swiss-are-increasingly-giving-up-meat/88713547) in Switzerland, and the *current* [Federal nutrition guidelines](https://www.blv.admin.ch/de/ernaehrung-erwachsene) suggest a maximum of 2-3 portions of meat per week (so more than the planetary health guidelines suggest).

So while we’re still quite far away from a sustainable agriculture and sustainable protein supply, and we still have serious and very expensive [public health problems with heart disease](https://ind.obsan.admin.ch/en/indicator/monam/cardiovascular-diseases-prevalence-age-15) (linked to overconsumption of unsaturated fats from animal products and underconsumption of fiber and particularly resistant starches from legumes), and it’s important to discuss this in a *nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel* sense after the very clear loss of *Ernährungsinitiative* at the vote two weeks ago, I’m really not sure rehashing outdated alarmist pie charts based on easily contestable data is conducive to that end.

    9. And yet Switzerland is always top5/top3 in the lists of countries with longest life expectancy.

    10. Not surprising, considering that agricultural subsidies primarily support the livestock industry in Switzerland.

That’s because that “diet” is ideological nonsense that has been widely discredited.

    12. Well, for us as a family, we eat less & less meat each year now – despite the great quality of Suisse beef

I’d like to know the consumption by age range.

The empiric data of my pov is that people tend to eat less meat as they age. 25 to 40 are more aware of the stakes. I’m more appalled about the 13-17, a lot of them have my grand-parents’ knowledges about meat consumption aka I need meat at every meal for my proteins. (But I could be biased I work with teens that have social issues.)

Do other people share my observations ?

are these „recommendations“ from the same people who have been telling us for the past 50 years that we should be eating low fat , high carb diet (ie, replace fat with sugar) ?

    15. Isn’t most of Switzerland’s population east european? they eat a lot of meat there.
