      Data: OpenStreetMap
Roads: Drive times from Valhalla (open-source routing)
      Basemap: OpenFreeMap / OpenMapTiles.
Tools: Node.js, MapLibre GL JS, HTML canvas

In this simulation it is assumed that you drive 10% under the speed limit. This is to account for traffic, construction, and breaks. This is likely not enough of a penalty in the core of the cities, but is likely too much for the rural country roads. In future versions I may try to use population density as a proxy for this multiplier.

Things I am working on: trains, population / population density, and waypoint suggestions

What are the speed limits for Australian highways? I would’ve assumed it’d be like Texas or something where you can go around 75+ mph in empty areas.

    3. I’m really curious of those empty zones in core or the 2 two rings around the major cities. Why is there white spots? Is that just because there is no road there or does it really take over 8 hours to get to a spot only 20 miles from NYC

google says new york to raleigh is 7 hours 59 minutes. makes me doubt the data

    5. Coastal people have no appreciation for what a huge population center the Midwest is

    6. Florida is fun, you can be 8 hours into the state and still not to the Florida Keys.

I like the idea. I wish the color scales were more divergent though. It is easy to see 0 vs. 8, but the steps in between aren’t as clear.

    8. Assuming no traffic? Once took me 8 hours to get from Santa Monica to Palm Springs

    9. You know, I can walk to the nearest public transportation and with a few transfers within 8 hours I am in another country.

In fact within 8 hours I can reach every single neighboring country in every direction and in some cases even the country beyond that.

And the best part is I don’t even have to pay attention most of the time.

I would love to see them on the same map, as in the 3 US ones together and the 3 Australia ones together

I’d add the standard *laughs in Texan* line, but Australia’s on here, so I guess I should shut the fuck up

The Chicago one is messing with me a little since I know it takes more than 8 hours to drive from Detroit to Houghton, MI and that’s without ever leaving the state.

You can definitely get from Chicago to Toronto in 8 hours, at the right time of day (I.e. night).

New York (from Manhattan, Battery Park which is the worst case) to Toronto is 8h 30, so from anywhere more reasonable it could be 8 hours. Anyway, farther than this map shows.

Chicago to Upper Michigan is pretty accurate! Just took this drive and right around 7 hours to hit the edge and then another hour to go further

    15. This is incorrect, at least as far as Los Angeles goes. We speed in California. You can get to SF in 5-6 hours depending on traffic.

Says you, mate! No MFP out there is catching the Nightrider for speeding except Max Rockatansky!

Now do the opposite Tijuana to Los Angeles on a weekend. It can be between 3-5 hours just to pass 1-2 miles to get to the border and another 3 hours to get to LA. 8 hours right there.
Same for those coming from LAS Vegas after an event. Easy 8 hours just to get into LA

    18. It’s 8hr 26 min from NYC to Toronto right now at 5:01 pm, so I can’t imagine that 8 hours of driving would only get you to St Catherines. You should at least be able to make it to Hamilton.

    19. Now do Point Roberts! Don’t forget to take into account border crossing delays 😛

    20. From Houston, 8 hours would get you to Ft. Stockton, Texas, 500 miles away. El Paso, Texas is another 3 hours making it a total of 11 hours (750 miles), and you are still in Texas.

    21. So, from LA m, Chicago, and NY you could visit a different country, take that Australia

New York is significantly overstated. I’m pretty sure you’d still be sitting in Manhattan traffic trying to get across town.

Really puts in perspective how much more developed the eastern side of America is vs the western side
