No deal should be made before midterms. And if we can, hold off until he is out of office. Deal with whoever is next, if possible.

>“They’re gonna come in and they’re gonna say, ‘Sir, we are sorry,”’ Trump said. “They’ve treated the United States very, very badly. I think a deal will be made but it’s gonna be fair.”
They’ve hit us hard with trade actions and expect us to apologize. I say „they“ because I’m of the opinion that Trump no longer (or ever) has much in the way of independent opinions, and is guided by his closest confidants.
Besides, the GOP largely supported his actions.
>United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said last week that “the reality is President Trump is comfortable where we are on Canada,” adding “there’s no urgency on our side.”
>“I am hopeful that both sides will eventually negotiate a resolution to this dispute, but at the same time, reaching an agreement would likely involve both sides making concessions that they have publicly signalled they are unwilling to make,” Obregon said. “So the current status quo might persist for a while.”
The worst outcome would be a rushed outcome. I’m fine with the status quo, and I think the longer that it persists the less exposed to threat from American trade action we will be. In that way, it may be best for Canada if we don’t reach a new deal with the Americans.

There is no economic benefit to the US derived from Trump’s insane trade war with Canada. It’s an entirely self destructive own goal from that perspective. This is simply a dominance and submission thing for Trump. I’m going to show the world who’s boss by picking on a country who I think is an easy target. It hasn’t worked out as planned.
Others are always expected to give him a „win.“ There can’t be something that’s mutually beneficial. The other party must be made to be a „loser.“ That’s how his mind works.

It’s not even worth pursuing a trade deal with the US at this point. Better to just ride out the storm and focus on diversifying and strengthening our own economy. Any deal made with the trump administration is worth about as much as a soiled diaper.

I’m sure someone on our side will say sorry, but I don’t think it’s going to be the apology he thinks he’s getting.

Any time Trump says to expect something in a few weeks it’s an empty promise. He continuously drops the „it’s just over the horizon“ vague promises and they never materialize. It’s not worth the mental bandwidth to listen to it.

I honestly hope it gets done for the sake of our workers. Then over the next year’s Canada can diversify trade so this never happens again.

Bah hahahahahahaha!!!!
Trump is completely deranged if he thinks Canada is going to come crawling back, hat in hand, to apologize for, well, ANYTHING. Trump started this little shindig. Canada might finish it, but it won’t be the way he thinks it will end.

I don’t think it’s Canada that need to apologize. Trump needs to apologize to the whole world but he won’t, and even if he does his words mean absolutely nothing on the world stage

[I don’t feel any urgency, either.](https://www.google.com/finance/beta/quote/OSPTX:INDEXTSI?sa=N&tab=fe&window=YTD) We’re not doing *great* but this hasn’t been *devastating*.
The problem for the Americans is that any trade action that would *truly* hurt us would be met with reciprocal actions that would be devastating for them. We provide *essential* goods that, [try as they might,](https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/trump-says-us-will-keep-buying-canadian-potash-belarus-would-sell-lower-price-2026-09-22/) they cannot easily replace with another supplier.
