Question out of genuine curiosity. Are these foreigners mercenaries or are they fighting under the Russian banner like international forces in Ukraine? I feel like this distinction determines if these guys are POWs or criminals.

I understand that material like leads credence to OSINT on counter-disinformation and public awareness. Identifying foreign recruitment and participation in Russia’s war is going to be continually important, and we got to have these cases documented.

At the same time, I think we need to be careful about how individual cases are presented, especially given the virality of social media and the subjective nature of cases. I want to stress that one person’s actions does necessarily mean they are a proxy for an entire nationality or community. Without context, awareness like this can very quickly turn into stereotyping, hostility, or collective blame. Plainly, it’s fucked up and I know international Agencies are doing their best to counter these things, we even had our own folks here in America that have been on both sides of the war.

What I want to stress, is that we can acknowledge that foreign nationals are participating in Russia’s forces, investigate how and why that is happening. But we still need to do better at making it clear that any blame or responsibility belongs to the individuals and the organizations involved.

Perhaps it would be worthwhile for posts like this to include a brief advisory reminding readers to avoid generalizing an individual to their countrymen? A reason I write this is because I’ve been inspired by Ukraine’s resilience, bravery, courage, determinism, and humanity. I feel what they feel in hopes for a better tomorrow without Russia at their doorstep. As American of Argentine descent I hope we always extend the same consideration regardless of our nationality involved. Russia and tyrants like them thrive on division, and my own personal hope is that we prevent them through how we live online just as much as offline between each other.

There is value in raising awareness across our institutions and we need to do this. But there’s also a need to make sure that awareness does not become another vehicle for demonization through an adversary’s means or within ourselves. War after all thrives on these things and it is a crude and destructive tool for either sides.
