Analysts generally agree that frontier, or cutting-edge, US models are still some way ahead of their Chinese counterparts.

Centralised authority over critical infrastructure and commercial activity means China is generally better placed than the United States “to address any AI disaster”, said Omdia’s Su.
However, Chinese companies do less voluntary monitoring and evaluation work than US ones, said Leia Wang from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace (CEIP).
Neither government seems prepared for a loss-of-control incident like those outlined over the last few weeks, she said.
China’s regulation, though, is “iterative … they are quick to adapt and release new measures”, she added.
China has had an algorithm registry since 2022, but warnings on agents released this year suggest a switch in focus “from controlling what AI says to controlling what it does”, per Concordia AI.
Beijing also issued national regulations this year aimed at curbing emotional dependency on companion AIs.
They’re pushing back because they can take an opposing position in words with zero risk, and because they’re behind on AI development. The irony of course is if they push ahead they run into the same embarrassment when their AI hacks their government or business systems.
China didn’t catch an AGI/ASI bug, so rather than doomsday scenarios, they focus on problems LLMs can cause today.
Basically we’re demanding unilateral deceleration.
In China, there’s not much in terms of current political rhetoric and/or world history to support trusting western governments.
Difficult to imagine they would respond to calls to limit themselves, especially considering US has zero safeguards or regulation facing AI development.
From analysis Ive heard, China has far more oversight in place than America. If we truly expect to see them at the table it seems we need to show some ‘lead by example’ initiative. Maybe agree to open weight transparency.
Beijing has nailed it. This is all a giant red herrings for the gullible to create an advantage of some sort. AI has not achieved general intelligence and this form probably never will, but it is experiencing a slowdown in capex, so „pay no attention to the man behind the curtain“!
And this is why fundamentally AI development will never slow down because the yanks are in direct competition with the Chinese and vice versa. Both sides are shit scared of losing that race. It’s nuclear development all over again. The risks and possibilities of mutual destruction are irrelevant, because each country developing it has convinced themselves that their own national survival depends on being the ones to get to the finish line first.
First, US is not warning over rapid AI development. Some US frontier providers are. Second, many US officials and technology advocates have pushed back on the warnings. So the framing as a China vs US argument is a massive overreach…
Realistically, if what OpenAI and Anthropic are warning about was true, China would probably be right there with them on trying to come up with a framework for how to proceed safely.
Instead, China is sitting there going “wtf are y’all smoking?”
The thing here is, OpenAI and Anthropic wanted to go public by the end of 2026. That’s not happening because the economics of LLMs don’t make sense and the bubble would pop. So the only way to move forward without the bubble popping is to push this narrative so that the AI companies can push off their IPOs while also saving money on model creation. Creating new frontier models is incredibly expensive.
The other half of it is, a huge number of employees and leadership at these companies believe in effective altruism and/or rationalism. Like, they effectively believe that the creation of a machine god that will kill us all is inevitable and it’s batshit cult stuff. So that’s also why a bunch of these people are being so hysterical. It’s weirdo stuff.
A lot of the anti AI discourse in the West is artificially propped up with Bots from the Eastern countries and they more heavily monitor what their people see so that’s why it’s considered a problem in the West but not the East.
