Das Batalha-Kloster ist bereits riesig, aber der Teil, an den ich danach immer wieder dachte, war der, der nie fertiggestellt wurde.
Die unvollendeten Kapellen waren als königliches Mausoleum gedacht, der Bau wurde jedoch schließlich eingestellt. Es gibt immer noch kein Dach – Sie gehen durch unglaublich kunstvolles Mauerwerk und schauen direkt in den Himmel.
Das Kloster selbst wurde nach dem Sieg Portugals über Kastilien bei Aljubarrota im Jahr 1385 gegründet und wurde zu einem der großen Bauprojekte der Monarchie.
Es ist einer dieser Orte, an denen der unvollendete Teil vielleicht das ist, woran man sich am meisten erinnert.

It’s a feature, not a bug
I’ve heard that this chapel is unfinished because otherwise the windows wouldn’t get light and you couldn’t appreciate the beautiful glass artwork. Heard this from a tour guide one time i went to the monastery.
Now in Batalha they are paying hommage to this unnfinished look and are doing the same to the buildings affected by January’s storm.
Not unfinished, the (roof) dome are the sky and the stars.
Something like the Pantheon of Rome were in the center of the dome a enormous Oculous is open to the exterior elements.
Other ancient buildings use this tipe of elements, and some even can trace precise dates and cosmic events.
