The woman declares, in Mandarin inflected with a slight accent, that Chinese men should marry “us Russian women.” In other videos on the Chinese short video platform Douyin, she describes how much she loves Chinese food, and hawks salt and soap from her country. “Russian people don’t trick Chinese people,” she promises.
But her lip movements don’t quite match the audio of the videos, which were posted recently to an account using the name “Ladina.” That is because it is footage of Shadé Zahrai, an Australian career strategist with more than 1.7 million TikTok followers, that has been modified using artificial intelligence. Someone dubbed Ms. Zahrai’s video clips with a voice speaking Mandarin Chinese to make it seem that she was peddling Russian products.
Welcome to a flourishing genre on Chinese social media: A.I.-manipulated videos that use young, purportedly Russian, women to rally support for China-Russia ties, stoke patriotic fervor or make money — and sometimes all three at once.
Well she is as fake as the actual Sino-Russian ties. Regardless of how much the supposed Chinese help to Russia dominates the news agenda in actuality the economic cooperation is rather strained. Chinese banks are reluctant to extend any sort of credit to Russia and even more reluctant to service the money transfers in export/import operations. So this whole thing is just mighty weird

When I see an article „nationalising“ an issue like AI-generated deepfakes, I get this funny feeling like somebody is trying to shit in my head. US venture capital launched the modern AI race and fake shit was always gonna be an outcome of that. Different countries, in a competitive world economy, are going to deploy this tech now, in the same way that the US developing nuclear weapons was inevitably going to be followed by other countries doing the same.
(Note, of course, that we don’t have real AI in anything but a marketing sense. We have supercomputer-powered number crunching pushed into our faces with political and corporate power. One day this facade of AI may be replaced with something else. For now it is just a putsch and a puppet show.)
The challenge remains, regardless of the japes of the current Enemy No. 1 of Washington: how can we unpick society’s productive energies from the compulsion to engage in nonsense games? How can tech development be brought under democratic control? Most people don’t really get what AI is. Barely a handful of years ago most would have considered it sci-fi and not real-world. We have to deal with it now, I have to suddenly work out how to dig into the registry and turn it off in my instance of Windows ffs, cos it was pushed for by certain interests, not because the population clamoured for it.
Westerners worried about the tomfoolery-potential of AI should be fighting to rein in their own rulers and arrest development of nonsense, labour-undermining tech.
