Die derzeitige Regierung zerstört eine Beziehung, die über 50 Jahre aufgebaut wurde. Als Europäer hoffe ich, dass wir aus technischer Sicht gestärkt daraus hervorgehen, aber wissenschaftlich gesehen ist das für die internationale Zusammenarbeit eine Unverschämtheit.
Außerdem sind die dadurch verursachten Startverzögerungen einfach frustrierend.

Just like everything else, this admin is doing everything they can to isolate and destroy the US.
What did Europe expect? Nothing gets done without a bribe now.
The golden age of America looks an awful lot like international pariahhood.
Republicans love destroying everything worthwhile and goos.
Some of these comments are exhausting. We went from “NASA may no longer provide one instrument on an ESA-led mission” to “America is an international pariah destroying everything” in about six seconds. Maybe unclutch the pearls long enough to ask a few basic questions.
This story is missing some pretty important information if we’re supposed to make an informed judgment about the decision.
How much would VenSAR actually cost NASA to finish? How much has already been spent versus how much remains? What specifically would have to be cut elsewhere to keep funding it? Was this decision based purely on the administration’s proposed budget, NASA’s current appropriated funding, technical/schedule issues, or some combination? What are the actual savings?
Those aren’t minor details. NASA’s own earlier budget projections had EnVision costing tens of millions of dollars per year for several more years.
And buried in the article is another rather important detail: ESA **hasn’t even received formal notification from NASA yet**. NASA says discussions are ongoing, while ESA says it is proceeding with a European radar because it *looks like* NASA won’t be able to provide the U.S. one. ESA also expects its replacement radar to perform essentially the same science, although the change has delayed the mission by a year.
None of that means pulling out is necessarily a good decision. It means we don’t have enough information here to know whether it is.
But why bother with costs, alternatives and tradeoffs when we can read a headline and immediately launch into the usual Reddit **wah-boo-sob story about the end of civilization**

It looks like the mission budget is about $700 million, judging from some non-credible sources I spotted. The launch is planned for November 2031.

The question of where the heat goes is interesting.
