Weaponization of space is imo inevitable; the military has had stuff up there basically for as long as we’ve been able to put stuff up there, and when a military has valuable stuff, other militaries want to be able to break it, which necessitates being able to defend it, which necessitates needing to be able to get past the defenses, so on and so forth… It’s distasteful, personally, and the idea of space-to-surface weapons is lowkey terrifying, but having capability up there is attractive to military planners

I did a stint for the Navy as an intelligence analyst. If anyone believes the US (or any major power) is just now putting weapons into space, they’re extremely naive.
I feel like our weapons in space is just our ability to scuttle deprecated satellites into inconvenient orbits used by our enemies. This administration has ‚mutual destruction‘ vibes.
Anyone that thought we spent all that money in the 80s and didn’t was deluding themselves. Not to mention every navy ship and most around based missile launchers can launch anti-satellite missiles.

The fact this announcement is coming out now may reflect a judgement of higher risk of adversary activities, though it could also be the product of slow government decision making.
Mind you China and Russia have had weapons (and allegedly already tested them in orbit) for years now.
China outright said they have a satellite killer up there. Russia used a defunct one to target a US comms satellite in 2009 (but said they didn’t and totally wouldn’t lie about it even though it was very obvious from the trajectory)
Objectively good thing for deterrence. Otherwise other countries can just turn off your Internet or communications if they decide they wanna get froggy

There is nothing illegal about conventional weapons in space. Every Soyuz crew capsule that docks with the International Space Station has a handgun stored onboard.

This is how far from the reality we try to paint we are in the US we’ve come. Spending the money to use space to point weapons down at the Earth to horde shit from others is peak greediness and avarice. People wonder if the ‚great filter‘ will be catastrophic attack from aliens or such. Nope. It’ll be this shit getting loose.
the scary part isnt just putting hardware up there, its the debris and escalation loop. even a non-destructive test can turn one orbit into years of tracking problems. curious if the article gets into verification rules or is it mostly about the announcement?

As soon as the star wars program was canceled in 1993 in my mind was basically admitting they finished it. And they have weapons in space at that time. Pretty sure improvements have been made.

The sun regularly has solar storms that wreaks havoc on ground based systems. Tell me that the government has enough control over these weapons when they lose control, can’t communicate with the platform and the onboard computers are fried.
