The headline is misleading. Although the makers do make BEVs, many of them also make cars that are not.

Too bad they suck in cold climates and too bad most places don’t have the infrastructure to support everyone having one… Plus, you are at the mercy of the grid and more easily controlled but keep rolling up your sleeve…

The vehicle category that is growing faster thsn EVs is ebikes. They outsell EVs in the US and we are way behind there as well. It is predicted that ebikes will be the best selling category of vehicle worldwide in a decades time. In much of the world they will replace smelly loud 2 stroke scooters. Cities like Bangkok or Beijing could lose the smog and the incessant noise. In the US and Europe, there is a whole lot of financial incentive to ebikes. The average American spends 17% of their salary on cars. Thats about $1000 a month. As wages stagnate, the savings could make the difference between a life of rent or purchasing a home. 17% of the workweek is a full day. Sock those savings away and you could have $120,000 in a decades time. Even if the ebike only replaces half of your drives, your car will last twice as long and your savings will be proportional. Imagine the financial impact in Africa, South America, and Asia. People with zero ability to buy a car can have mobility that would be impossible to afford. This could change the financial prospects of entire regions in the same way cell phones did in those areas. EVs are great, but the future is two wheeled.

    4. Couldn’t they do what Canada is doing? Just limiting the cars to a certain number?

Also, colonises is a pretty funny way for Europeans „leaders“ to discuss this. They seem to want to maintain the old setup where non-western countries supply raw resources and/or products with low added value (e.g. screws) to Western corporations to use to build more expensive products which can be sold to their people as well as the people in same developing nations the resources came from. A setup that arrose from the relationship they developed with their former colonies. A relationship that primarily benefited them and made it extremely difficult for these developing nations to actually develop.
