Beyond the immediate human tragedy, I wonder about the longer-term demographic consequence for Russia.
Siberia and the Russian Far East already have enormous territory, resources and infrastructure needs, but relatively little population. If years of war remove or absorb large numbers of working-age men, who will actually build and develop Russia’s eastern regions in the decades ahead?
Perhaps one of the least discussed costs of this war is not territory lost or gained, but the future industrial development that may never happen.
