      Dishonest article. It’s hardly a feat when the bar is already very low in what is expected of kids at junior cycle level. Other countries laugh at us.

      Top notch job done by the teachers despite having some of the highest class numbers in Europe. Credit where it’s due.

      This is actually encouraging. Its not just the gifted kids, but we’re able to teach all kids at all levels.

      To our credit, we didn’t highly digitize the classroom. Schools which trialed tablets or laptops often gave them up later. In other countries it became normalized and outcomes plummeted.

      I’m so glad my dad encouraged my interest in reading as a child, he would always ‘embarrass’ me when I was small by telling his friends at work that I was reading above my age group as a young fella. He would take me every Saturday to Easons in Limerick City in the 90s to buy a new book.

      I also had fantastic teachers who also encouraged me to read more and more, Ms Synnott and Ms McElhinney in St Brigids NS

      Now that I’m older I understand my dad was just proud of his son, and he still reminds me and my sisters how proud he is of us (he’s 60 today 🥳)

      Great to see although I rarely read now I always had a book on the go when I was younger, was always something I was very strong at in school.

      I’m Dutch, living in Ireland with Irish wife and kids. My mum got on to me how horrible the Dutch youth is doing with this study after linking me a Dutch article, they’re about the lowest rated ones in EU right now especially with reading. Thankfully my Dutch niece and nephew (my sister’s kids, her Dutch grandkids) are doing grand but as a former teacher she was fuming.

      Was great to link her this article about the much better-looking prospects of her Irish grandkids:P
