Their current goals it to take the 4 oblast they made a claim on – but if by the time they will do it militarily there will be close to no resources left in Ukraine – nothing will stop them from trying to get a better return on their investment after getting the most fortified region and take Odessa oblast for example. If there will still be resources left in Ukraine – they can just stop there instead.

The disconnect between Putin’s timeline and the tactical reality on the ground is becoming a massive vulnerability for Moscow’s negotiating posture. The Kremlin is telegraphing to U.S. envoys that they intend to capture the entirety of Donetsk by the end of 2026, but the math simply doesn’t support the geography. As ISW points out, at the current rate of infantry-paced advances, they wouldn’t take the oblast until 2032.
