At a July protest against data centers in Lubbock, Texas, state Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller took the microphone to share his concerns about data center land grabs in his home state. But what he said could apply to what’s happening in dozens of states across the U.S.
„When [data centers] first started popping up, nobody really knew much about them,“ he said at the protest. „I found out real quick that they were taking up our very best farmland. … And [developers] give sometimes 10 times the value, so it’s hard for farmers to turn that down.
Nationwide, investments in computing power sparked by the new technology of artificial intelligence have set off a commercial land rush, sending property values soaring in unlikely and out-of-the-way places.
Don’t buy it.
While I am 100% against data centers and think they are bad….. even if EVERY project was approved it would have a negligible effect on land markets.
There are plenty of real reasons to oppose data centers without inventing fake ones.
Absolutely insane this nonsense gets published on major news sites. Data centers use up essentially 0 space in this country.
There is no longer anything that does not fuel a backlash.
A good rule of thumb is that a data center campus needs about 1 acre a megawatt. So a gigawatt data center campus would require around a thousand acres. A total industry investment of *a trillion dollars a year* would generate about 20 GW of new DC plus compute investment, or 20,000 acres of data center development/yr. That’s a square parcel of land a bit under 6 miles on a side – one hell of a data center campus if it all got built in one place, but still…
There are approximately 874 million acres of farmland in the United States. To use 1% of that, 8,740,000 acres, you would need an investment of 470 trillion dollars.
Yes, they are following the fracking playbook to get desperate folk to sell and leave, but once the data center is in, it is unbearably loud — people are losing sleep, losing their minds and guess what? No one can sell their house to anyone new and you are trapped forever.
