Having traveled through Greece and Turkey in the last 2 months, I don’t think I have seen so many stray cats anywhere else in the world! In the cities, in the small towns, at small remote ruins or religious buildings, stray cats everywhere!

In Turkey they don’t have that western pet ownership concept. Cats roam freely in and out as they wish. Turkey has the highest rate not in Europe but in the world

You would have a really hard time finding a detached house, or a ground-floor apartment unit that does not have several stray cats coming daily. Some don’t like to take the stray cats into their homes, which is understandable from a hygiene standpoint, but they will have a set number of cats coming for food and cuddles every day. It will be the same set of cats too, with specific names.
That being said, apartments make up a very large majority of availabile housing, and domestic cat ownership in apartment units may actually be lower than what one expects from Turkey due to several factors. Older people usually aren’t so cool with the idea of having animals in the household (due to religious and cultural reasons), and also financial concerns may be playing a role (because decent cat food is expensive here). Probably also people already interact with tons of stray cats and dogs on a daily basis, and don’t feel the need to have on at home as well.
Now do number of cats per capita, and Turkey & Greece will win.

I’m from Turkey and I have 2 cats, most of my friends have multiple cats.
In Turkey is many cats everywhere.
In Turkey, „Number of domestic people per 1000 cats“ beats everywhere.
Turkey is FAR higher than that, even excluding semi-domestic and stray cats. They are just not registered.

We have only 1 cat in our house but my moms feeding more than 5 cats in our garden, there used to be dogs but they disappeared

I just got back from Turkey and the amount of cats is amazing! A local told me that Turkish people do not typically own cats, but the community look after all the street cats, including veterinary visits and food etc. The cats all looked very healthy and friendly. It was awesome sitting at cafes and bars with the local cats paying a visit.
