So far, there is a polling consensus on this matter. Three pollsters – Angus Reid, Abacus, and Nanos – have showed the same thing. Roughly 75% of Canadians view the government’s decision to walk away from the US-Canada trade deal as the right move. For Nanos, the number reaches 85% when including somewhat support. It’s rare you see this level of support for anything; it’s clear that Canadians are quite united on this matter.

Across the board, Canadians indicate they want to fight back. 7/10 say they are willing to pay a higher cost for goods. 85% say that counter-tariffs are the right move. Over 70% believe the US is not a trusted ally of Canada. With public opinion like this, it would be political sabotage for a party or leader to be on the other side of these issues.

This is heartening because we may be in for a very rough ride. I think most Canadians understand what is at stake. This is not about the right trade deal. It’s about successfully resisting the “Don-roe” doctrine vision of North America. The Trump administration has been clear about that.
