      getting pvc into something useful has always been tricky. this turns it straight into engine lube without the usual mess.

      might cut down on new lubricant making over time. scaling from the lab though thats the part that could slow things down. if it works though we might dodge some of the plastic buildup in years ahead.

    2. PVC is the plastic recycling plants literally reject because the chlorine contaminates everything else. if this scales it’s a bigger deal than the title sounds

    3. I mean… good? But volumetrically, just off the cuff, I’d estimate we use 0.0001% as much engine lube as plastic 

      Edi: wow im massively wrong. The two are quite similar by weight. Perhaps factor or 2-4 difference but that would still make this huge

      Lubricants handle heat dissipation as part of friction reduction. The article doesn’t have any numbers on the available temp ranges of this. At what temps do the polymers unbind? Kinda hard to find practical applications without that info.

      Guys this a dumb question but aren’t we ultimately just delaying the same inevitable outcome? It gets dumped back into the environment, but now in lube form? Am I mistaken for conflating this with synthetic oil?

    6. The reason why PVC is so hard to recycel is because PVC stands for Polyvinylchlorid and handling Chlor compounds under less than fully controlled conditions is generally something best left for someone else to do.

      Finding a use for it that will not risk killing people while trying to implement it is a good thing.

      I think a big problem is that with recycling you never know 100% what you put in and there will always be ratios and contaminations that you don’t expect.

      Let us see if this is more than just a press release about results accomplished in a lab under ideal and very controlled conditions.
