My dad (who is from Uruguay) has been saying for years that China has been to usurping the US‘ influence over Latin America, and that most Americans are so concerned with literally everywhere else in the world, they don’t even know.

akshually this is not to be confused with a full picture of all moneyflows of course. besides — black market stuff, stuff under the radar, money laundering, tax dodging activities — huge amounts of narcotics flow north because the USA has an unquenchable thirst for cocaine.

Around 2010 is when China surpassed the USA in manufacturing capacity.
All this map shows is countries buy the most stuff from the country that makes the most stuff at the time.

Of the 24 years covered by this map we have 8 Bush, 8 Obama, 4 Trump and 4 Biden. Seems to me if there is any blame to go around, it is split evenly.

The thing people do not realize is that China plays different. They do a lot of investments in infrastructure and industry in these countries, and that’s their entry point. They grab you by the balls with that, long term. Look at the port they’re building in Peru and the railroad that will go all through the continent to the Atlantic. It’s crazy. Also they can buy Uruguay 500 tons of meat without or very few taxes, that for China is nothing but for Uruguay is a huge deal.
The US just grants you the privilege of being their friend. But when you need them, they kinda don’t really do much. And LatAm needs investment not a thumbs up in twitter.

There’s gonna be a lot of people claiming it’s some sorth of South American or Chinese duplicity, but the main reason for this is the fact that the US handed over its manufacturing to China to make a quick buck.
