Surprised there’s so little coming from the HRE, especially when it was meant to be the secular arm of the Catholic Church. Did the First Crusade happen during one of the many occasions an emperor and the Pope were beefing?

People seem surprised most people came from France… but the First Crusade was launched by pope Urban II in Clermont and (officially) led by the bishop of Le Puy Adhémar de Monteil. So it’s quite logical
How about map of all participants in middle east crusade. I’m curious was this majority west Europe thing

Were the French simply more involved, or is it an artifact of recording? Could they have better records for the time, or do we think actually they were more into it than their neighbors?
