Canada stands out as the only American country to not experience a globally high homicide rate while also not implementing a draconian fascistic police state like Bukele did in El Salvador.

Edit: also a crazy thought I just realized but I have never lived in a city that doesn’t have a relatively high homicide rate.

I was born in São Paulo, Brasil and lived there until I was 3 years old. Grew up in Washington DC, USA from age 3 to age 19 during the 2000s when the homicide rate was very high there. Then moved to New Orleans, Louisiana USA at age 19 and have been here for the past 8 years.

I literally have no idea what it’s like to live somewhere that doesn’t have a very high homicide rate. It’s frankly just a fact of life for me, to the point that I forget it’s not something everyone just lives with. In 2021 when the homicide rate peaked really high here in New Orleans, I’d basically fall asleep in my apartment to the sound of gunshots in multiple directions every single night.

It’s weird though because I’ve never personally felt unsafe living in any of the places I’ve lived in, and it’s not like I’m a wealthy guy who only lived in rich neighborhoods. I currently live in a very low-crime area by New Orleans standards but my last apartment before moving in with my girlfriend was in one of the most violent neighborhoods in the city, yet it never really effected my psyche or made me feel scared to walk around. I’ve never gotten involved in gangs or selling drugs, which are the root causes of the vast majority of murders in every city I’ve lived in, so it’s not like murders are something your average civilian is participating in or victimized by.

However, I did lose a close friend of mine when I was 17 in DC to a stray bullet that hit her in the head when she was driving her niece home from after-school care. That was the only time I’ve ever been personally effected by the high murder rate and it broke my heart, it still triggers some severe anxiety when I think about it. She was such a sweet person, and we had been friends since we were little kids.

One of my best friends in high school also got involved with street gangs and trapping near the end of high school, no matter how many people in his life told him the path he was going down was a huge mistake. I never stopped being his friend despite the lifestyle he was beginning to participate in, although I did distance myself from him quite a bit, and I used to be fucking terrified that he would end up shot dead or in prison. I remember I had reoccurring nightmares for years about him getting killed, sometimes in the dreams he’d be killed by another dealer and sometimes he’d be killed by a cop. Thankfully he grew up and matured more and completely stepped out of that life, he’s still alive and not incarcerated and we’re still homies. I see him whenever I go back to DC for Christmas or Thanksgiving. He technically still sells drugs, because he works in the legal marijuana industry now haha. But I’m very glad he didn’t get too deep into the shit to the point that there would be no way out.

It’s obvious. A man can go and roam outside in India without fear of being killed by some random person. If he’s killed then it’s because of some personal animosity. Women cannot go outside at night, especially alone. In US neither men nor women can just go outside alone unless they are in a busy business district, and sometimes it’s even dangerous in those areas, Chicago especially. Random gunmen who don’t even know you might shoot you down. This thing doesn’t happen in India. No random person kills you. It’s always personal animosity. The guns are not available like it’s cucumbers at Walmart. If you allowed guns in India, then we might see anarchy.
