Doctor here. He’s talking about dry eye syndrome, which is pretty serious since it affects people’s quality of life significantly.
In his post he says that he was been successfully treated by a doctor in Florida that has a unique protocol.
However, when you see people talking about a disease that can only be treated by a doctor in Florida who charges $10,000 plus, you should be wary. Feel free to do your own research but from what I’ve been able to dig up, this does not seem legitimate.

As someone with meibomian gland dysfunction and dry eye caused by autoimmune disease, people really don’t realize how debilitating dry eye is. It is not as simple as use some eye drops and go on with your day. When dry eye gets severe it creates a very hard to break feedback loop of inflammation, and pain, and corneal nerve atrophy, which in turn causes more dryness, which in turn creates more inflammation, and pain, and corneal nerve atrophy. And when your meibomian glands start malfunctioning, it’s not only that your eyes aren’t producing enough tears, it’s that what tears they do produce are not stable and evaporate quickly.
And there’s not nearly enough research, and treatment options, and then on top of that, many of the treatments that DO exist are not covered by insurance, despite being FDA approved.
Like, I wind up spending $1,500 a month on dry eye treatments that I *need* to be even just a little bit functional and maintain any quality of life or my job. It’s incredibly incredibly frustrating.
This said, the treatment Howerton got, is a controversial one even within the dry eye community given that probing can risk damage to the meibomian glands, and studies run not by the guy who invented probing (the doctor who Howerton saw) have had mixed results.
But if he’s gotten legitimate relief, I’m real happy for him. Cause dry eye sucks. And whatever you can do to make your life a little more comfortable, I say do it.
And while I know he’s a funny guy, and It’s Always Sunny is funny. But a lot of the flippant dismissive comments sort of prove exactly why it’s so important that DED be talked about more openly.
