Ask yourself, if Smith was an American asset working to undermine the Canadian position in regards to our negations with the Trump regime, *is there anything she could possibly do to help Trump right now that she isn’t already doing?*
I think we’ve been trying diplomacy lol.
Not saying we shouldn’t be open to getting a better deal if Trump is willing but at this point there’s really no bennefit to singing anything with this administration.
More like Danielle Smith is doubling down on a failed strategy. The Trump administration’s capacity for diplomacy is virtually nil; they’ve ignored nearly every norm around diplomacy there is. Further, there is overwhelming evidence that this American administration is not responsive to diplomacy. Concessions and diplomacy have only resulted in more tariffs and animosity from the Trump and his administration. Retaliatory-tariffs have been the only strategy that induced the Americans to return to the table to negotiate.
Even if she doesn’t want to put oil and gas on the table, it’s extremely disappointing that she’s still offside with the rest of Canada in regard to retaliatory tariffs. Her view is most likely influenced by the fact the UCP and federal conservative base are split on this issue, so she’s busy playing both sides and talking out each side of her mouth. It’s expected that Smith would behave this way, but there’s almost no reason to continue listening to her.
At what point does Danielle Smith recognize that she’s on the wrong side of this issue? Truly?
Can she not read the room? This has become a huge bipartisan rallying point for Canadians.
And of course we will continue to negotiate with the US at some point. But for now, we have to let them squirm a little bit.
She knows that the Canadian nuclear trade options include energy exports. I assume she is getting pressure from her alt right base, and the oil industry to walk this line
The separatists would absolutely love if Canada were to place some export taxes or restrictions on Alberta’s oil, it would push a lot more people to their cause.
It’s hilarious that Canada had made it extremely difficult and downright impossible in some cases to build pipelines to get our oil to non-US markets and now the same people that were in support of those pipeline restricting policies/actions want us to fuck over the customer that takes 90% of our oil exports.
It would be absolutely devastating for Alberta and I fully support Danielle’s opposition to it.
Danielle needs to worry about her responsibilities under the division of powers in s. 91 & 92 of the Constitution and let the feds worry about theirs.
Diplomacy doesn’t seem to be helping. The Liberals have tried blatant flattery, and all it does is embolden him.
At a certain point you have to say enough is enough, and it’s not clear to me where Smith thinks that line is.
There is no diplomacy or appeasement with this administration. That ship sailed long ago. There is only standing your ground.
Americans say our trade deficient with them is some $400 billion. They claim this as one of their primary grievances.
Nearly $200 billion of that is Oil and Gas products.
Export Tax Oil and Gas.
She’s desperate because half her party’s base are wannabe American separatists and this trade dispute is going to sink her referendum this fall.
And if things gets worse, Canada will probably implement some sort of measures to raise costs and/or reduce export volumes of energy products to the US, which will hit the AB economy hard, but could also threaten her leadership if her backbench and party membership revolts.
Sad leader making sad commentary. In order for her to make good with Canada, she’ll need treatment and concerted therapy. I hope she gets the help she needs.
When approx 50-70% of our oil sands are owned by the USA, and our Premier is 100% owned by the USA, this is the result.
Even before the collapse or the trade talks, polls were suggesting that almost 60% of Albertans would support an export tax on fuel. I’m willing to bet there is still room to do so without being scared of the 30% of Albertans who support a referendum.
Export tariffs don’t need to be all or nothing. A modest 5% tariff on our energy exports would still result in a ~$10B impact. Crude accounts for about 75% of that.
Just so everyone understands, Smith is happy for the auto manufacturing industry, 80% of which is in Ontario, with over 130k jobs and 600k indirect jobs to disappear, because she just wants to sell oil to the US. If the oil industry was trying to be removed from Canada the way Trump is trying to remove manufacturing, she would be wailing for more retaliatory tariffs.
By the same token she is riling up the crazies in her province with this separation stuff; seemingly because she is worried that she is going to be out-crazied by an opponent who will take her job so she has to show the base she is crazy too (lest she gets the boot like Kenney).
The thing people like her don’t realize, if you open the crazy can of worms, you’re not going to out crazy the actually crazy person, they will take your job because you’ve normalized crazy.

Of course she is.
She is perpetually trying to suck up to Trump, she really wants to be an American state governor. It’s why she is doing everything possible to advance the separatist cause because she is fully aware that an “independent” Alberta will be swallowed whole by the US.
Canada united in fighting the US goes counter to her obvious desire to make Alberta part of the US. Diplomatic language has been tried and has consistently failed to achieve Canadas goals so the only solution is to now exercise our power. She will try to do everything possible to protect the US and sabotage our collective security in doing so.
