Whether the clause about trade agreements with other nations was unreasonable or not actually depends on the details.
Having such clause is actually very common and standard. Even Mark Carney said this, before you attack me for saying the same thing.
There is actually a clause about trade with „non market economies“ (which means China) in our current agreement.
Given our negotiatiors‘ objection to it, It is an educated guess that Americans demanded more than that, but we don’t know just yet. Time will tell.
Carney made the right decision here – the only thing we should be giving up is retaliatory actions.
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: this is game theory, a Prisoner’s Dilemma, and Carney’s wisely playing it like a Prisoner’s Dilemma. We match what they do, dollar for dollar, and we continue to offer to drop this retaliation for a cessation of aggression on their part.
We’re dealing with an incredibly dishonest madman here. This is going to hurt, but if we want it to end it needs to hurt both of us.
There’s no concessions that will change how the US is behaving. There’s nothing we can do to reduce the economic pain either – refusing a deal but then refusing to retaliate won’t help, it will result in *further aggression* to cow us into submission. Only retaliation provides a negative incentive to aggression, and the aggression is what we’re trying to end.
If we want this to end, we have to take our lumps and make sure they take the same lumps. Nobody wins, we all lose, until its over.
