Also the Americans insisting, last minute, to control what trade deals Canada can or cannot enter into with 3rd countries had something to do with it.
Who would agree to such nonsense?

„Carney said Washington wanted to narrow proposed auto provisions covering Canadian parts, steel and other content, while excluding some truck production. The Americans also sought to restrict Canada’s ability to strike trade agreements with other countries and weaken its protections for language and culture, he said.“
I’m glad French is mentionned, I’m just pessimistic on the fact that it would torpedo the deal on its own. Good if it helped in rejecting this bad deal though

Another misleading headline. It was *one of many* key reasons, not *the single* key reason. The other key reasons included last-minute changes to the coverage of tariff reductions (e.g., medium and heavy-duty trucks produced in Ontario, and Canadian content of vehicles), and our ability to enter into trade agreements with third countries.

It was very obviously not *the* key reason. The headline seems to be forgetting the last minute attempt by Nudnik to cut off our trade with other countries.
It’s the same kind of shit Russia tried to impose on Ukraine. Or Japan on Korea.
Right before invading them.

Why would the mega world care about Canadians using the French language? I can’t even come up with a possible cultural war/stupid bullshit reason.

The OBVIOUS way Trump is trying to ignite a language war among Canadians is OBVIOUS.
The orange Mussolini thinks he can divide Canadians so he can take control of Canada…

French is dangerous to Americans. They wouldn’t know the difference between French and illiteracy and would wothout a doubt drop the toaster in the tub.

As David Eby said, the last minutes changes were aiming to us the 51st state. As a francophone myself, I can’t let an other country decide my linguistic rights for me

Burying the lede… What the hell is this? Why would any sovereign country agree to this?
Imagine someone offers you a job but makes you sign a document stating you’ll never be able to look for another job.

Typical Gazette BS. Focus on the French language and culture!! It was because the US tried to limit who we could do business with, what deals we could make outside of the US. That was the primary reason for us walking away, and rightly so.

Lutnick did a ChatGPT overview of trade irritants and sent it to the American negotiating teams. They are lazy and stupid.
