So we are going to eat these tariffs so we can keep paying for overpriced milk and cheese.
I might be an insensitive twat (or fucker really), but what the hell have these businesses been doing for the past year and a half?
We’ve been witnessing economic warfare for this long, with a PM that’s stated a billion times that the US is a shitshow. Are we really supposed to feel bad here? Where’s the pivot? The one the government has been practically begging every single business to do? I get that we don’t have the capacity to pivot everything at the same time, but some industries have had ample time to do something, yet they haven’t.
If this lasts long term people on both sides of the border are going to suffer.
Trump just threw his own automotive industry into total chaos trying to kill ours. Good luck with that.
„Some of you may die but that is a sacrifice I am willing to make.“

Yeah that free market is a real jerk sometimes
Time to diversify to meet the needs of an ever changing global economy!
It’s going to get real ugly, US is probably gonna retaliate when carney does his tariffs and if it keeps escalating it will be much worse for canada as mentioned in the article
Maybe a couple months from now people might rethink if this ‚bad deal‘ would have been worth it to save people livelihoods, this and next month’s job numbers going to look real bad
My heart goes out for people who are worried for their jobs. I don’t want anyone to lose their job and I’m trying my best to only buy Canadian to help the best I can but at what point do businesses start to diversify and changing their business models? Tarrifs have been in place for a year now. You need to adapt and pivot. You can’t just sit around and wait for the tariffs to disappear.
I get cars are difficult but there was one person who said their company would close their doors if the tariffs go through. They sell paper and 90% of their business is to the US. It seems to me that it would have made sense to start looking for Canadian clients last year. The world is constantly evolving you need to evolve with out.
Don’t get me wrong I know it’s hard to pivot but you need to do something.
„They have worked hard, in good faith, to defend the interests of Canadians throughout these negotiations up until the very last minute. **However, last-minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.**“
The Trump administration tried to sucker punch us in the face at the last second. Would some of you really still take that altered deal?? Really???
Carney isn’t stupid. He’ll do better than the average bear would in his position. He’s not working with much when it comes to the intentions of the other party. He can only do what he can do. He’s smarter than they are and has Canadians backs. The other party is out for themselves and don’t care about their citizens.
Canada will be ok.
Don’t even have to read what happened. 1000%, the US trade negotiators tried to sneak something in at the absolute last second and pull a fast one on the Canadian delegation. It is exactly what dealing with people in good faith when they deal in bad faith looks like.
America is our enemy, Americans who support trump are terrorist scum.
Will soon be time to announce Canadian-made SAAB aircraft.
“Confessions of an Economic Hitman”. Read the book. Seriously this is the US MO all over the world. For decades. It’s why they are so hated. Trump and his cronies are bully pigs. 🐷 Canada 🇨🇦 has talent, resources, educated people. We won’t starve or freeze or lack resources to build in our own country. We should have done this decades ago. Good for Carney and let’s take care of each other.
Remember when they tried to bend over Ukraine over the minerals deal and eventually were forced to negotiate in good faith? What a bunch of losers.
It was inevitable that a policy of appeasement would only lead to more onerous demands from the Trump team in the near future, with Canada starting at an even worse position than the one we have now. Support Canada. Buy Canadian, or from an honourable TRUSTED trading partner.
While Carney should be taking this with his „elbows up“ approach, businesses will suffer.
The only sliver of light here is that businesses at least have some „certainty“. Not being able to tell customers if it’s going to cost them $5 more or $10 more is just as bad as telling them it’ll be $10 more. Customers, like the sellers, want certainty. This is a point of certainty at the very least.
NAFTA (or whatever it’s called now) items are still exempt. How material will this be for everyday consumers?
Some would have wanted us to do a Neville Chamberlain. No „deals“ you reach with Trump are worth the paper they are written on. Judging by negative remarks his sidekick Vance made about Carney, I’m sure they were surprised Carney walked.
No normal leader, when you’re in the middle of a major war, would have started this sort of thing with your ally. It shows complete mental instability. It’s something an unhinged despot would do.
Maybe we need to do our part and support businesses where we can. I had no clue that the Niagara flower industry will be impacted or the Western honey farmers. We have such poor media coverage. My city of 240K doesn’t have any media at all, just social media.
If you are siding with America its time for the RCMP to treat you traitors as traitors. Enough is enough.
Round them up.
Here come the handouts and more inflation….
Instead of tariffs that punish Canadians, impose a $5/barrel crude levy & use the billions raised to support Canadian business and workers.
Let the Americans pay for both sides of their stupid war.
No deal is fine but reciprocal tariffs are a pants-on-head ridiculous response. Carney is going to tax Canadians to punish Americans. Something that would only make sense to an economist. He’s making inputs for Canadian businesses cost more when they can’t absorb it. If Trump wants to tariff Americans let him. We can’t stop that. But to turn around and tariff ourselves is flat out stupid.
Time will be our best allies. Mid terms are coming and the world sees the truth. US will be isolated and created so much against them that will last for a long time
UK lad here. Sending love and empathy across the sea! Stay strong. Mid terms are coming up and Trump probably won’t be able to do this anymore.
lutnick
When two big players clash, smaller players suffer. I don’t think mid term is going to change anything, and no a Democratic president will not change much. It’s a generational trend until one of the big players admits defeat.
This is the type of response you can cheer on for 5 minutes and then hope they figure it out ASAP. Tariffs on both sides are not good and this unfortunately is only going to get worse.
Businesses were going to close with a trade deal. The question is which ones.
Bottom line as spoken by ? No deal is better than a bad deal. I really wish that Canada could turn around and just stop exporting to the USA for 6 months or so. Sell to all other countries instead of the USA. I believe that would send a really good wake up call. Especially with the elections coming up very shortly. That would show and confirm that the “USA” don’t need a thing from 🇨🇦 Canada.
Just tell Nutrien to charge em triple for their potash and watch them starve. Fuck them…
