I know I’d rather be in Brazil but the easier option is Tenerife.

Well, yeah. It is understandable. I’ve been in both places, and Canary Islands, and they have a great advantage. Overthere, nobody was threatening to stab me if I don’t give them all of my values.

The Canary Islands are less than a 5 hour flight from both London and Paris. Sao Paolo and Rio are more than 8 hour flights from Miami. Brazil is really far from any wealthy countries capable of sending large quantities of tourists. The Canary Islands are also part of Spain making them pretty safe. Brazil has a major issue with crime and poverty making it less appealing than a wealthy tropical paradise.
Edit: A flight from New York to Tenerife with a layover in Madrid takes 20 minutes longer than a flight direct from New York to Rio

Proximity to Europe

No passport needed for EU tourists and plenty of direct flights from pretty much any European country. The smaller size makes it more convenient for visiting local attractions. Add in safety and a more family friendly vibe and it makes total sense.

I’ve been to Brazil a few times, to São Paulo, Paraty, and Santos. It’s just not that touristy from the perspective of the foreign tourist. The Canaries are pretty much nothing but that.
Paraty is popular, but you’re not talking big hotels and huge beaches, more historic and cultural.

Well… Yeah, duh. Brazil is an isolated country with multiple entry barriers. The Canary islands are in an open border zone with an extensive number of countries and higher population.
If you look at total tourism including domestically, Brazil actually ranks up to around 80 million tourists a year.

Shouldn’t surprise anyone. Canary islands has been promoted as a „tropical tourist destination“ across Europe for decades now.
Brazil on the other end isn’t promoted at all in comparison.

Just to give people an idea of how connected the Canary islands are, pretty much every region UK airport has a flight to each of the 5 main airports airports (Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Tenerife North and South).
Give this site a go and see how connected they are

Well, the majority of tourists visiting Brazil’s most famous cities—São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro—are domestic tourists.
The city of São Paulo received over 47 million tourists in 2025, but of those, only 2.5 million were foreigners.
It is not that these cities receive few visitors; rather, it is because most of the tourists come from other parts of Brazil.

I do a solo trip every year and I’d love to go to Brazil some day but I am honestly too scared to go alone. It’s not only about crime but the cities are so big, everything is so spread out like it’s not like you can go and book a GetGuide day trip from Rio to Sao Paulo or the Amazonas for example

Their main market should be their neighbors but they don’t have enough purchasing power.

I’m Canarian and we have a great problem with the current tourism model. Us Canarians are being displaced from our lands by European investors that either buy complete buildings to sell only to other europeans or to build up hotels in protected zones. There are zones where we can’t buy or almost enter, everything is European owned, from the buildings to the car mechanics, there is no Canarian close.
We have very very week salaries and high cost of livings (compared to the purchasing power of the average European that comes here) so we can’t compete in any way shape or form, and the tourism model has made sure to buy the elections together with the local caciques (mainly descendants from Spanish families that have hold power since they invaded the islands), so essentially we are trapped forever in a model that extracts all money that is being produced here to Europe (like 80%+ of it goes back to Europe) and keeps up forever poor meanwhile we loose land, flora and fauna, our aboriginal remains gets destroyed and our culture gets mocked in order to sell us as the “Bali or Hawai’i of Europe” (as some commenter said down below in a totally serious manner).
If you come to the islands you are directly supporting this model and making our lives worse by giving them your money, not better, as the money you spend here mostly goes back to one of your countryman’s pockets and us Canarians never see more that cents of it.

It’s about proximity to Europe and offering temps way above average in colder European months.
Cheap accommodation, cheap flights, cheap resorts.
