      Ireland has had more than 1 gold medal, for example, so this chart is absolute horseshit.

      * The UK and Germany are still respectable academical nations.
      * Despite all the odds, Turkey proves it is still a major power.
      * The rest of the Europe seems to lost its intellectual competitiveness.

      I’m very impressed with Romania. Does anyone know the history of why they are so successful?

      Edit: according to Wikipedia they have 93 gold medals though?

      Edit2: checked my own country (Sweden) and they have 151 gold medals in the summer olympics. They even have 23 gold medals just from the Olympics held in Stockholm 1912 alone. Whats up with this data?

      The reason the former „East“ is so overrepresented here is because this olympiad was founded in the eastern bloc and was and still is much more important there. Kids are being prepared for it at school and it plays a role in education, while in western europe most people dont even know it exists. That doesnt mean any education systems are better or worse but this map simply shows where this competition plays and historically played a role and where not. This started as a semi propaganda campagin for the Soviet Union and for a long while it was limited to Eastern Bloc countries only.

      Centralized entry exams to high schools and universities have created a very competitive education system in turkey. Furthermore many turkish students aim to study abroad during major and master degrees. Parents try to provide maximum bugdet to their children’s education. Supplemental education instutions and private tutoring is very common among middle and upper class families. These factors may contribute to relatively high number of medals.

      The number of people confusing Olympics and Olympiads is completely frying me. Do people just not bother to read anymore? They just write a snarky comment without even comprehending what’s being talked about? No wonder online discourse absolutely sucks if this is the norm lmao.

      This does not account for population per Capita so it’s not all that relevant

      Smaller countries will have less medals
