Yea, I bet it’s very sad to think of all the viewers you won’t have. But not so sad that you’ll re-evaluate the category itself!

    2. *“I am saddened to hear that* [*BTS*](https://variety.com/t/bts/) *has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision,” Mason wrote.*

Above is the main point of the article. I think this is a fair response.

I’m more curious about whether other groups and soloists would also choose to not participate in the Grammys and if it becomes an even bigger deal to the point where the Grammys would reverse on the introduction of the new categories, though I doubt that would motivate them to participate for at least the next year.

„genre category such as Asian Pop, or Jazz or Country“ Asian pop isn’t a genre dawgg it’s just pop

    4. Maybe don’t minimize achievements for Asians? That goes for all Asians ofc. No one wants a participation award over the real thing

    5. laborumliber on

Didn’t expect anything different. The usually PR statement that doesn’t really adress the problem.

    6. Let’s be honest. Grammy only cares about viewership. They think it’s an easy way to gain Asian viewership with some bs awards

    7. Afrobeats, latin, asisn. next to get only trp and segregate it further, they will add, korean, chinese, hindi, philipino and so on.

Kpop/cpop/jpop etc are just pop music in different languages but a xenophobic organization cant really think that far.

Didn’t this bs all start just because of Bad Bunny? Like why are the Grammys so scared of international acts?

    9. „Oh, boo hoo! Let me play a sad song for you on the world’s smallest violin.“

As someone who hasn’t been an Army for almost a decade now, I find it absolutely hilarious that the Grammy Chief is like “but we made this racist category specifically for you, did you think about how this would affect US” like dude you can’t just continue putting out categories so that a specific race won’t be a contender for the bigger awards (ie the “Urban” and “Latin” categories) people are sick of this shit.

“asian pop” isn’t a genre, i’ve literally never seen or heard anyone say the words “asian pop” before this fiasco. lumping all asian countries pop music into one “genre” is nuts, like do they not hear themselves????

    12. artkeletraeh on

Since it’s only Latin, Asian, and African music that is being segregated, it pretty much shows that they have a bias against the Global South (which includes most of Asia)

Maybe he should write a statement by himself because he almost copied the statement word to word from an army on twitter . It’s sad how much they are mocking BTS and army’s . Like you couldn’t come up with a statement on your own ?That’s all I have to say this reflects how serious they are and they think it’s a joke.

    14. For calling himself a music creator he doesn’t know Asian pop isn’t a genre truly this is a typical PR statement just empty and shallow words

    15. Exact_Ad_8565 on

They literally ghosted Golden and the other superior songs for SOTY! Thank you BTS for demanding objective voting over nationalism or race!

Grammy chief sad to hear he cant bait bts fans for 3 hrs only to give them nothing.

    17. Grammy voter (and K-Pop fan) here. I had doubts about the idea of an Asian Pop category when it was announced. True, it doesn’t preclude a song being submitted to another category, but I’d be concerned about splitting votes. If, for example when „Golden“ was up for Song of the Year (which I voted for) and was also in an Asian Pop category, how many voters who were trying to decide between Golden and let’s say Manchild would vote for Golden in the Asian Pop category and think they’re freed up to vote for Manchild for Song of the Year?

    18. justanotherkpoppie on

LOLOLOL what a bland PR statement. Him saying that the purpose of the new categories is „never to divide,“ sure Jan! We definitely believe you! /s Also, what kind of genre is „Asian Pop“? As if the music coming out of South Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, India, etc. is all similar enough to be grouped together just because they’re considered Asian? They’re just sad to lose potential Grammy viewers 🤷‍♀️

      His statement btw:

      >“I am saddened to hear that BTS has chosen not to participate in the Grammy Awards process this year, but as a music creator, I understand and respect their decision.

      >“I do want to clarify something that seems to be getting lost in the conversation. The Asian Pop category was created to celebrate the depth, diversity and extraordinary growth of pop artistry coming out of Asia. The spirit of this new category is to shine a dedicated spotlight on these important artists. More categories mean more artists’ work is recognized. It’s never to divide, but to expand who is recognized by our 15,000 Grammy voters.

      >“I also want to be very clear: submitting music in a genre category such as Asian Pop, or Jazz or Country does not exclude an artist from also submitting and being considered in the General Field categories, including Record of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year,” he continued. “Those categories remain open to any eligible recording, regardless of genre. Recognition in a genre category and recognition in the General Field are not mutually exclusive. An artist can absolutely pursue both.”

      >BTS has been nominated for [Grammys](https://variety.com/t/grammys/) before, including in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Music Video categories, but has never won.

Okay, but closing out the statement with this one though is… something. While some might call it innocuous, those unfamiliar with BTS will read their collective statement as being butthurt at not winning and opting out of the process. It also obfuscates the conversation about the systemic racism within the Grammy system to keep huge Non-American artists/artists of colour out of the general categories.

(sorry, I used to work in PR and every word on a press release is intentional. So this one jumped out to me 😅)

Mfer should watch the amount of insincere shit he says on record, he’s just giving the rap line fuel to torch him with on the next album 💅

    21. More like „I’m saddened to hear that our ratings are going to be in the dirt next year“

    22. Harvey Mason Jr. has literally worked in and for K-pop songs, he of all people should’ve understood the new categories were a bad idea

    23. Dude acting like the voting process for who wins a Grammy isn’t like an oligarchy and has been for years.

    24. electric_boogaloo_72 on

This “category” is like when I went to a casino buffet in Reno and one of the items was labeled, “ASIAN SOUP.”

They might as well just serve that at The Grammy’s.

      🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

    25. Nordilanche on

Probably „saddened“ because they know viewership will be tanking without BTS.

    26. ominousorchid on

I can’t wait for Jungkook’s gaming live the same night as the Grammys getting more views.

    27. Gonnagetbant on

My wife ( Korean ) says it is both flattering and insulting. Flattering because they’re so scared of being dominated by Kpop that they had to send them to their own category and insulting because it’s trying to put them into a little bubble to give them a congrats trophy to shut up the fans.

    28. Ok_Mathematician262 on

the way i saw this category as „othered“ before i even knew that if a song is submitted for this category it can no longer qualify for a pop duo/group performance or pop solo performance or any other genre performance. they can still qualify for the main categories but this is THE genre all asian releases that are deemed „asian“ enough will now fall to. quite literally segregation.

    29. random_person0902 on

Wtf is Asian pop? Kpop is literally just pop that is in Korean, take away the K and it’s just pop. Same with Cpop, Jpop, Ppop, etc.
