I worked with a Chinese woman in Canada repairing cell phones back in the days of Motorola Razors and flip phones. She was very sweet and charming. We were just repair techs, but her expertise and knowledge was incredible. While I was soldering in new jacks and replacing display flexes, she was doing BGA and tuning with components at a microscopic level. She told me about phones her team designed in China. She walked me thru the whole transmit/receive of the physical components. She unveiled the magic inside. She explained why reception was so bad in Mount Pearl NFLD. She solved a problem with the VCOs in a certain model. She was an actual engineer working as a tech, and then one day she was gone. It was very hush hush. Rumour was she was a spy. I really liked her; we all did. Why on Earth a spy would work in our repair shop remains a mystery.

Later, I worked a military contract, and an engineer was suddenly gone. Same rumours, another same profile as the one in this story.

This is all rumours and BS. It’s what I heard, and I don’t know WTF I’m talking about. I don’t want to cast bad shadows on good people that match this profile. I shouldn’t even say this. All I know for sure is that after nearly seven decades of life, I don’t know shit.
