Nothing new under the sun. It’s about men but women too, everyone is victim of social media and our terribly cold society

Despite all the beautiful advancements in technology and well mannered courtesy and serenity Switzerland has, on equality between women and men, most of its neighbors have done more.

One in three Swiss must be Turkish.
This study is misleading and a shitshow in how its results are being presented.
The researchers took the top 20% of all participants on their „M-Factor“ and declared them the „risk group.“ The items were scored 1 to 4, where 1 means disagree and 4 means agree, so the midpoint between disagreeing and agreeing is 2.5. The threshold for landing in that top 20% works out to a score of roughly 2.25, which is below that midpoint. In other words, you could disagree with the problematic statements on average and still be labeled „high risk,“ simply because you disagreed a little less strongly than everyone else.
They set the cutoff at the top fifth of the group, so a group of that size exists by construction, no matter how people actually answered. This is a relative ranking sold as if it were an absolute finding.
7% of the women were in the high risk group as well. So for every 3 men there is a woman that is also problematic?
This is what got turned into headlines like „one in five men is toxic“ or, in this post, „one in three young men.“ What the data actually show is that younger men disagreed slightly less strongly than older men. That is a real but far less dramatic finding.
Instead of correcting those misleadings media articles the author reposts those headlines. [Männer.ch](http://Männer.ch) is very biased on does not at all represent men or fathers in Switzerland.
Fuck this propaganda. This could have been a very intersting study and some of the questions really made me think about my fellow men and their views, but instead they choose the clickbait/left narrative.
**A third of young Swiss men score in the top band of a researcher-defined masculinity-attitude index**
That’s actually what is shows. Studies made on survey are useful to compare group of respondants, and seeing how they differ in their answers, or how they interpret the questions differently than other groups.
Without surprise, young men have stronger view on women than older men and women themselves, and the opposite is probably true as well, that young women have stronger views on men than older women (but they did not test for that).
Can we somehow blame this on the (far) right? Yes we can, because people from patriarchal structures are often very conservative and thus also (far) right. Problem solved – thank you for your attention to this matter!
**TL;DR:** Radicalisation of young men is unacceptable — but it doesn’t come from nowhere. Modern feminism has drifted from the equality project of bell hooks and my mother’s generation into something openly hostile to men, while the disadvantages boys and men actually face go unnamed: a school system staffed almost entirely by women, male-only conscription, women are now the majority of graduates, support programmes run in one the direction only (female), and quota demands that stop at the door of every female-dominated profession. If we won’t discuss any of this honestly, we shouldn’t be surprised when the manosphere does it for us.
**Longer version**
While all of this is bad and unacceptable, as the father of one son and three daughters I also understand these young men. Modern feminism has little in common with what my mother, bell hooks and others fought for. It has turned hostile toward men in general and does little for equality overall. I’d encourage anyone to read „Of Boys and Men“ by Richard Reeves, recommended by Barack Obama, The Economist and the New York Times — because what is happening today is precisely what pushes young men into this cesspool of misogyny.
It starts with the term „toxic masculinity.“ There is nothing toxic about being male. Character traits can be toxic, and the same traits are just as present in women. The term does real damage and should be dropped. Imagine being a small boy who repeatedly hears that a whole set of character traits is toxic, and that this is because he is male — while no traits coded as female are ever described that way, even when they cause just as much harm.
Then comes the school system. Around 98% of kindergarten teachers are women, 88% at primary level, and women are also the majority of secondary teaching staff (60%). Studies indicate that female teachers mark girls more leniently than boys, yet nothing is done to address it. Feel free to consult the BFS for more details on this.
The situation gets worse at university. In most Western countries, women are now the majority of graduates — you only need to look at any university’s annual statistics, and the trend keeps rising.
Conscription applies to men only. Every year I have to accommodate dozens of students in the two classes I teach, because military service makes it hard for them to sit their exams. This isn’t equality; it states plainly that men’s time is worth less. And children are no excuse: most young women don’t have children at that stage of life, so the argument doesn’t hold.
To make matters worse, universities have introduced numerous schemes encouraging women into male-dominated subjects, namely IT and engineering. My own university runs several such programmes and courses. Yet we do nothing comparable in the subjects where women already dominate: nearly 70% of our education (PH) students are women, the same is true for art, social work reaches a striking 80%, and even our economics classes are 60% female. We also run entrepreneurship classes for women, but none for men, along with female accelerator programmes and women-only networks. The men’s network had to be shut down for discriminating against women a few years ago — while female students can, quite rightly, join the same startup accelerators as the men.
Then you reach the workplace, and it’s the same: accelerators for women, women-only networks. Male employees seem to be forgotten, and are expected to share everything.
Feminism demands quotas, but conveniently omits them for physically demanding jobs and for female-dominated fields such as education and healthcare.
Similar patterns can be observed in politics across Western societies. There are task forces for every group imaginable — except heterosexual men.
We need to find ways, very fast, how to get young male into all these female dominated professions.
Last but not least. We talk constantly about diversity and stage images that represent a reality which doesn’t exist. How many images have you seen featuring Eastern European, Turkish or North African men? Meanwhile Black people, who make up a very small share of the Swiss population, are heavily overrepresented.
The title of this post is misleading and the study it references is wildly speculative. It’s based on a questionaire of 6000 men aged 18 to 64. The researchers then quantified factor M, whatever that means, and 30% of young males aged 18 to 24 fall into that category.
For one, the article claims it’s „representative“ which with 0.15% of the male population it is decidedly not. Second, answers to questionaires are extremely subjective. And third, the factor M is determined by threshholds to answers decided by the researches, which again makes them subjective.
Change any one of these variables and you get wildly different answers.
I’m not saying they are wrong. Looking at femicide statistics they may well be right. But if they are, it’s by luck not methodology. I wouldn’t be surprised if the uncertainty is above 25% (in either direction). Good for them no one will ever be able to replicate or disprove their work.
I am suprised the results were this low.
This is a low number, i hope it will be more in the future. Men needs to fight back against feminism. This BS needs to end.
